Post Twain, Mark: The American Claimant. (Illustrated) v2.1 18 Sep 2010

Mark Twain (real name Samuel Langhorne Clemens) (1835-1910) is probably one of the most known American writers. He was immensely popular in his time, especially noted for his wit and humour, and he is still widely quoted nowadays.

"The American Claimant" (1892) is maybe a minor work of Mark Twain's, illustrated by Dan Beard. A family of Americans descended from an eldest son of a British Earl, Lord Rossmore, has been claiming the title for many generations. The actual young Earl, filled with idealism, decides to abdicate, to change places with the American claimant. He travels to the US with the intention of contacting Colonel Mulberry Sellers, the claimant, to exchange places. Sellers is an American dreamer, always down on his luck, an inventor, a philanthropist of sorts.

This version is based on the PG text, but with extensive corrections. Through proofreading and comparison the scans available in archive.org, I restored the missing italics, corrected dashes and hyphens, corrected also minor typos or inconsistencies in the original text... and of course included a hyperlinked TOC, formatted it, etc. The 26 illustrations are re-extracted from the scans and included where appropriate.

As usual with my ePUB uploads, for those wanting to read this in a web browser, I include an index.zip file: just unzip this and the .epub file in the same directory, and open index.html (and modify index.css if you like).

Any kind of feedback is welcome.

EDIT (v2): Updated to support the epub2pdf script.

EDIT (v2.1): Fixed illustrator's metadata.
