No, and no.
Another: "Why not just kill them? I'll do it! I'll run up to Paris - bam, bam, bam, bam. I'm back before week's end. We spend the treasure. How is this a bad plan?" |

I think pooh is on the right track with Les Miserables, so given this last quote I'll guess The Count of Monte Cristo.

It is only my guess as well, but I think that The Count of Monte Cristo is correct and only required Orlok to stop by to confirm it.

Okay, I've got one here.
"Meanwhile, he continued the business of undressing, and at last showed his chest and arms. As I live, these covered parts of him were checkered with the same squares as his face; his back, too, was all over the same dark squares; he seemed to have been in a Thirty Years' War, and just escaped from it with a sticking-plaster shirt." |

I'm going to need more than this, but I remain hopeful.

Hmmm...might have to be more obvious. I figured the description of one of the characters was a fairly easy target, but then, maybe this isn't as well-read a book as previous choices.
A bit more prose to get the brains churning. "Some years ago--never mind how long precisely--having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world." |

^Winner. I thought it would be pretty distinct for anyone remembering the story a bit. The second quote is from the second sentence. I wanted to just put the first two sentences, but the first is just too easy.

And:
"I had seen him grow wary at the thought of his family or his religion; now I found I, too, was suspect. He did not fail in love, but he lost his joy of it, for I was no longer part of his solitude. As my intimacy with his family grew I became part of the world which he sought to escape; I became one of the bonds which held him." |
