Probably in response to the new Kindle with special offers, and maybe the hope of getting new sales before the new B&N reader and Amazon tablet.
Good to see the price filtered down to here in Aus...NOT!!! I have a gut feeling that whilst they say the $99 is a spring price, that it will remain like that afterwards. |

They would sell like hotcakes here in Aus if they were at $99.

Not enough. They need to drop it to at least $85 to remain competitive with the better spec'd Kindle ($115).

I honestly think with the Aussie dollar and our import taxes etc, $120 would be a very reasonable price here. Unfortunately it won't happen. With no Sony stock the kobo is really the only e ink device one can buy locally, but at the current $179 it is a bit hard to chew, especially given the low price if importing the same unit.

Borders (US) has been selling the Kobo for this price for quite some time. Their website used to have quite a few devices on it, but now it's down to just two - Kobo ($100) and Cruz Tablet ($125).
...but then, they're struggling to remain afloat. |

I'm tempted to buy another one. I don't know if I can wait for a firmware update (that may or may not happen) to get the go to page function and CBZ compatibility on the older kobo...

In Canada the wifi kobo is on sale for $129. Seems everything to do with the kobo is a little more expensive here. The Verso clip light they sell with it is $20, the gel skin case, $20, and the case with the 4 corner straps and a cover is $30. I forget how much the roots leather case was but I think it was $30 also.

Still $199NZD here in New Zealand - you could order it from a US site and get it shipped for cheaper than that.

The Kobo dropped to $99.99 at Christmas time, but at the same time Borders was selling the Aluratek for $10 less. When all three local Borders stores in this area closed, the price of Kobo dropped to $80, but only in those stores (it was still $100 on-line). I had considered the Aluratek, but the drop in price (combined with other features I'd been looking for) tipped the scales in favor of the Kobo.
I bought the Kobo insurance package when store closing prices dropped to 60% off. It came with a case, some screen cleaning wipes, & a couple of in-store coupons. I didn't like the case; it seemed unnecessarily bulky, & only had a square of sticky paper to keep the Kobo in place. I bought a red "leather-like" case with 4 corner straps for $13 at Amazon. It doesn't take up nearly as much room in my already overcrowded purse as the "insurance" case, & it's bright color makes it easier to find when I've forgotten where I left it. According to whirlpool people have ordered for that price from the US and received it within a week. Pretty much works out to AUD100 delivered for a new Kobo wifi.
