Switzerland gets the Sony Reader on April 3rd

With the imminent launch of the Sony Reader in Germany (March 11th), it is not a big surprise that it would also be available in other neighboring countries any time soon. As I just learned, the Sony Reader (PRS-505 model) is going to be available in Switzerland starting April 3rd, 2009. It will be priced at 449 Swiss Francs, and comes pre-installed with a couple of reading samples and two full novels.

hey, good news ! will they be using the same system as previously, partnering with a publisher or bookseller for content ? how will that work, with the different languages in switzerland ?

I know it will be launched in the Netherlands as well in this year. No idea when or what price (the news article was from september 2008). So, I think they'll bring it out on the mainland at around the same time.

Taxes... I don't know how much VAT is in Switzerland, but I presume it's higher than in the US.

The USA doesn't have a VAT, so yes it is lower.

Sure but only 7.4% for this kind of device. That means the price before VAT would be 360$. The official list price is 299$ IIRC which means a 20% surcharge.

These 449CHF are just the regular German EU price and the regular German EU VAT but without the option of recieving compensation at customs.

The benefits of Switzerland's restrictions on commerical parallel imports! Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!

ps: I've become rather hostile to this stuff when I realised in 2008 that buying a single 8800GT in Switzerland would buy me two at Newegg. The cards are manufactured in Asia and have lifetime warranties...

The pirces can't be compaired directly - living is much more expensive in Switzerland, but the people also earn more - it should come down to the same value.
