Angry Amazon eBook price outrage!

Hello:

I just went to buy a kindle book and found the following...
Dragon Haven (The Rain Wild Chronicles 2) by Author: Robin Hobb.
mass market PB is priced at £3.84
Kindle edition is priced at £13.99

What is that all about?
I have sent Amazon an email complaining and suggesting they should get the price sorted out, but because of their rubbish contact system I had to use an old order number to get the email to send - apparently they won't let you send an email to them without a valid reference - what happened to general customer enquiries or complaints?
I'm certain a couple of weeks ago this books was around £5.00.
This kind of thing works directly against the market, because most people will just go and get it for free elsewhere instead - it's a shame the author will end up losing out...

There are about a thousand threads here talking about the same thing, it sucks, we know it.

There are plenty of age-liberated books and especially SciFi that are better than anything post-literate.

Just saying people should only read classics is rubbish.

So, Agency pricing is where all the publishers decide to sell at the same price? I though this was otherwise known as 'price fixing' and I thought it was generally frowned upon, if not illegal?

Don't know how it works in the UK, but we have a fixed bookprice here. Which means that the publisher sets the price for a book (a publisher, not the publishers, as a book generally is only published by one publisher...) and all parties have to sell for that price. Sales are not permitted until a book has been stored for a certain amount of time.

This isn't so (yet) for ebooks...

It isn't if you an afford to buy enough politicians to set laws that say that it isn't....

Surely the media companies that complain about other people doing unethical things wouldn't actually do anything anti-competitive and unethical themselves, though?

The paperback isn't out until february, so to be fair you have to compare the ebook to the hardcover (the price should drop on the ebook when the paperback comes out as well)

Outrage, really? The paperback s not available and the hard back is MORE expensive than the ebook. Why is there no outrage about the hardback book price?

Thanks for the great illustration of the folly that there is something new in book pricing.

Aha - it all becomes clear! From the Amazon page it is not immediately obvious the MMPB is currently not out yet - it only tells you when you click on it, (and since I wouldn't buy it in paper, I wouldn't click on it) It looks like it is out as it is shown in the format list, where the hardback is no longer available (no price)

So, given this latest infomation I am willing to retract my initial charge of 'outrage'

How was the OP supposed to know that? The website doesn't say it's not available until you click it or mouse over it.
