You knew. That's why you came trolling in the first place yesterday.

What really bugs me about MobileRead is the length of the threads before they are ended ... are they ever ended ? The first page of topics is always dominated by ancient threads.

The original post becomes outdated. The thread drifts wildly off topic. Posting to the 8th or 10th page feels like posting to the vapour .....

Can I ask the site to end threads after a reasonable time and when it starts to get stale or goes off topic ?
Most threads stay more or less on topic and with 100 000 + members you can't really expect a popular topic to have less than an 100 responses - its 0,1 % after all. IF it's one post per person.

The threads that go wild are in the wild part of the forum, so you can't really complain about them.

A New Posts search has a "Replies" column, so you can tell which are heavily commented and simply avoid them.

I'm not saying we should ban long discussions, but it would be nice if there was a way to optionally filter them out of the New Posts page.
An option to sort the New Posts list on a field like Replies might be nice. I don't know offhand if it's possible.

Meanwhile, instead of using New Posts, use the Advanced Search form. You can specify a number of criteria, including forums, posting date range and number of replies.

when I was new I would read the long threads for awhile, write down the page number I stopped at, do something else and come back to them. for the threads I was really interested in it was a lot of fun getting a weird kind of history of the place and picking up on the different and interesting characters

"Reactionary" because the mods won't lock any thread more than a week old?

"Aggressive" because you propose shutting off access to discussions we are participating in because you find them boring?

There are solutions to your problems. You choose not to use them. Your choice. But that does not compel anyone to produce an alternative solution that you like more.

We should all try to make this the longest and most rambling thread in the history of mobileread.

Maybe we could get Dr. Drib involved -- he's got "99 bottles of beer" going (with zombies, of course) down in the chat box.

What is the chatbox and who is this Dr. Drib? He sounds like he may be just what we need. My powers are too feeble to start and maintain an eternal thread. What is he a doctor of?

I have a feeling that this thread is becoming too long. And it contributes little. Neil

You're right. This thread has become too long. We should discuss that in further depth.
