Downloading eBooks from Amazon in other countries?

Hi all,

I'm thinking about buying an Amazon Kindle.
My question is, when I buy the device in the UK can I buy books from Amazon in another country as well (I'm German, but live in the UK, could I get ebooks from Amazon Germany?).

Not going to say about amazon becuase I simply don't know. There will be others allong that know far more about Amazon then I.

However I would like to say that from what I am told the Kindle is not the best choice if english is not your native tounge. Bookeen owners tell me that their readers have been designed with foreign langueges in mind and make it efortless to translate between
langeuges.

I would also like to plug Open Office, which speaks german like a native and its free to all customers openoffice.org

In the moment there are no ebooks on Amazon.de, in the near future maybe.

I just had a look and you can get German books on amazon.co.uk - but most of them are classics and not current ones.

I didn't know that there are actually no books on amazon.de available at the moment, thanks for the hint! Would it be possible then to download them from there IF there were some available?

Look in the German forum. There is a thread about Amazon.de and ebooks. It seems, in the next few month, there would be a kindle-store at amazon.de. In the moment there are german ebooks at amazon.us from a few german publisher, but you can only download them, if you have an us-account. As an European you can't download there.

If you wanted to use your German address/identity what you would do is register the Kindle at Amazon.com and then list your German address in the section in the Manage My Kindle webpage.

I'm not sure where you would have the best price selection.

If you wanted to use your UK address you'd probably be better off registering the Kindle at Amazon.co.uk and paying in British money. But you could register it at Amazon.com and put the British address under the Manage Your Kindle section. Then you'd get UK availability and prices but pay in American Dollars.
