New e-Book Market Report From GigaOM Pro

I wanted to just make a quick post to notify you about a just-published report on the e-book market. This 66 page report examines Amazon's strategy moving forward, the new partnership by Barnes & Noble and Plastic Logic, as well as examines the possibility of an entrance into the e-book market by Apple. It also looks in depth at Google's interest in this market.

See summary below and get the report here ($79 subscription required):

***

The emergence of a commercially significant electronic book (e-book) market in the past three years has been the result of two quite-recent technological developments. The first, and most critical, has been a breakthrough in the technology for manufacturing reflective electronic paper displays (EPDs), allowing for the introduction of affordable, lightweight and portable e-book readers such as Amazon’s Kindle and Sony’s Reader.

The second has been the rollout of reliable “3G” wireless broadband networks, which have made it possible to deliver digital books directly to reading devices without the intermediate steps of downloading files to a PC and then transferring them to a reader. Direct-to-device sampling and delivery, particularly with Amazon’s Kindle and Apple’s iPhone, have enabled impulse-driven e-commerce, which has been critical to early consumer adoption of e-books.

The technology for e-books, however, remains nascent. The Kindle and its ilk are very much first-generation devices that deliver the minimally acceptable experience. Further development of the business will be closely tied to future technological developments, including flexible and color displays, format standardization and rich-media applications. As the market grows, there are numerous opportunities for other technology players, from social networks to cloud service providers and more. This report examines the trends and opportunities ahead.

"impulse-driven e-commerce"

This phrase (for me) sums up one of the most successful aspects of the Amazon business model for the Kindle and their Kindle bookstore - anyone who scans the Kindle section of this site will see complaint after complaint (real or feigned) about how easy it is to click that little button - and presto - instant gratification!

For me, this ease of acquisition has led to not only more purchases overall than I would have done for pbooks alone, but has also led to more re-reading (and hence more purchases) of past pbook purchases. It all adds up.

@poohbear_NC - the addition of the whispernet wireless download was THE gamechanger for Kindle. That it took folks so long to realize instant download of books regardless of location was what was needed is pretty amazing if you think about it. Amazon used Apple as their model here with iTunes, and really the Kindle is like the iPhone, but more of an info appliance. Its the seamless hardware/online storefront/mobile broadband that makes it work.
