Given that "All Hallows Eve" is a Christian religious thing, I'm sure that a book on Christian Theology would be a suitable choice. We have many such works in our library.

I think the expectation is to find a fun book. Not one that would put most people to sleep.

Sorry, Jon, but to my mind, "All Saints Day" (which is what this is all about, remember?) has been completely overtaken by this ridiculous commercialisation of "Hallowe'een" and the religious purpose of it entirely forgotten.

Celebrate the religious festival or ignore the whole thing - that's my perspecitive on the matter.

Halloween has been over-commercialized, but trick-or-treating, haunted houses and scary stories for Halloween were around long before that.

I'm ok with the commercialization. Anything that gives me an excuses to gorge myself on Reese's Peanut Butter cups is awesome in my book

This isn't a bad idea. I should take this opportunity to read some books that I have on my Reader or on my bookshelf. I'll go for these three:
-Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Got it a while ago for my Reader but haven't read much past the first few pages.
-Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Just got it in hardcover at a book sale, I think it's supposed to be creepy.
-The Monstrumologist. Freebie for the Sony
-And if I get time, The Stand. Got this also in hardcover at the sale. I've had a million people tell me to read it, so I picked it up.

I recommend "The Graveyard Book" by Neil Gaiman. It is geared towards children, but something that adults can enjoy as well. It is available at the Sony store.

Slightly off topic as I do not know whether or not this is available as an ebook: For all saints day, I recommend a funny short story by Robertson Davies entitled "Refuge of Insulted Saints" and can be found in his book "High Spirits: A Collection of Ghost Stories". I recommend the whole book for Hallowe'en, actually.

It's a great book but I wouldn't call it creepy. It's about a true crime in Savannah and is as much about the city itself as the murder. After the book was published there was a big increase in tourism for Savannah. I think you can still take the book tour there.
It also resulted in tour buses full of little old ladies going to gay nightclubs to see Lady Chablis' drag show.
If you hear someone talking about "The Book" in Savannah, this is the one they mean.

Quote:
Among memorable Savannahians depicted are singer/pianist Emma Kelly, "The Lady of 6,000 Songs" (so dubbed by Savannah songwriter Johnny Mercer); Joe Odom, a southern gentleman/lawyer who covers his bad checks with charm; an inventor (named Luther Driggers in the book) who possesses a vial of poison strong enough to kill the whole city if it were to infiltrate the water supply; Minerva, the Lowcountry "root doctor" who works spells for Jim Williams; Sonny Seiler, Williams's defense attorney and owner of Uga, the University of Georgia's renowned mascot; and The Lady Chablis, a drag queen who gleefully crashes an annual African American debutante ball.
-New Georgia Encyclopedia

I think it's so cool that one book can make such a big difference to a local economy. Anyway, I'm still keeping it on the list because the cover is creepy

They had to remove the bird girl(the sculpture on the cover) from Bonaventure Cemetery to a museum for a while to protect it and the cemetery from tourists. Too bad you can get it as an e-book.

As for Halloween books, most of my favorites are not available as e-books.

Halloween to me is just "Candy Day" and has nothing to do with the various world wide celebrations of Holy days: El Dia de los Muertos, Samhain, All Saints' Day, All Souls' Day, ect.

I'm not a big fan of super scary stuff, so I sometimes will read something about "Hallowe'en" ...

Kelley, Edna: The Book of Hallowe’en (LRF only) uploaded by Patricia

"From the Author’s Preface:
This book is intended to give the reader an account of the origin and history of Hallowe’en, how it absorbed some customs belonging to other days in the year,—such as May Day, Midsummer, and Christmas. The context is illustrated by selections from ancient and modern poetry and prose, related to Hallowe’en ideas. Toc and picture added."

also Project Gutenburg... http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/20644

and manybooks.... http://manybooks.net/titles/kelleyr2064420644-8.html

or go back to an American classic...

Irving, Washington: The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow (LRF only) uploaded by Dr Drib

Icabob Crane, a superstitious schoolmaster, is in love with a wealthy farmer's daughter, and has a terrifying encounter with a headless horseman.

"All Hallows Eve" is a GREAT book. Charles Williams is a wonderful author of Fantasies. You can find my LRF version here on MobileRead, or Crutledge's PRC and IMP versions.

(I confess, my mind wasn't on Literature when I wrote the OP; rather, I was thinking of Strangling Stranger Stories and Zoned Out Zodiac Monster Mayhem-Type Stories, as well as the occasional Wizened Witch For Laughs. )

Thank you for the suggestion. I also found the below uploaded by Madam Broshkina.

Ryder, Arthur W.: 22 Goblins, v1 29 Sep 2008 .. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29903

"Mystical, Magical Halloween Puzzle Tales translated from the Sanskrit by Arthur W. Ryder.

And so it was written that in time long long ago there came into being a most mystic and magical story that held within its depths 22 smaller even more magical and charming little puzzle-tales.

And it was written by the wisest of all, that these stories should become known all over the world and be received with great honour and respect. For whosoever shall tell or hear even a small part of these magical mystical puzzle tales shall be suddenly be purified in heart and mind and deed. And thus, wherever these stories are told or heard, monsters and demons and giants and witches and goblins and imps shall be rendered powerless.... even on All Hallows Eve."
