Is it possible to buy kindle books from amazon without owning a kindle?

Is it possible to buy kindle books and convert them to the epub format and use another reader?

Yes. Download the Kindle for PC app and Calibre. Then visit Apprentice Alf (google it) to learn how to liberate your books. Once liberated, Calibre will convert them for you.

I'd be surprised if there are any content stores that require ownership of a specific device to buy content anymore. They might still require specific devices to consume the content, but they won't stop you from buying it.
