GlobalTech moves into DRM

The South China Morning Post (subscription site) is running an article about a Hong Kong listed company called Founder GlobalTech and their hopes for their DRM system. There is some interesting info scattered in the article.

Here's a summary:

Founder GlobalTech, a player in the biometric security market, has developed a digital rights management system and expects its DRM technology will help Chinese publishers develop e-books, the South China Morning Post writes citing managing director Eric See. "There is a huge business opportunity in the e-book market. The average production cost of an e-book is about HKD 10, while a printed version may cost HKD 100 to HKD 200," See said.
The Hong Kong government set up a working group recently to push the development of e-books and other e-learning resources. "Our DRM technology can be used to encrypt an e-book so publishers and intellectual property owners are protected from unauthorised duplication," See explained.

In July last year, Founder GlobalTech and e-book vendor Guangbo Media launched e-library 24reader.com, which offers more than 50,000 e-books using Founder GlobalTech's DRM technology. Prepaid game cards, widely used in online gaming, can be bought at convenience stores and used to buy e-books on the site. A user typically has to pay HKD 2 a day to read a full copy of an e-book.

oh, great, just what we need : another DRM scheme.

interesting detail though, i notice that if their figures are correct, the cost of making an ebook in china is apparently only FIVE TO TEN PERCENT of the cost of a paper book !!!

if this is true, then the prices practiced by many publishers are even more scandalously inflated.

Yeah, that's one of the interesting tidbits. Of course, it's according to this Eric See guy and who knows where he gets this data from!
