It's not infringement, as the original was posted on imgur through Reddit, which has a policy that the image will be shared thereafter in their TOS. Besides all that, Harry would have to remove his avatar if what he said was true, as he does not own nor has he gained a licence to use the Dalek he shows so prominently, nor has he even attributed the image to anybody as he should really do under fair use. If what he'd said was true then the whole music section of this site would have to be shut down and most of the avatars on here removed. What's good for the goose, eh, Harry? Not that I share Harry's viewpoint on many things, but:

Er, wrong. The Dalek in the photograph has been standing in my living room for the last 20-odd years.

hehe absolutely true.
People are willing to buy all kinds of media as long as it is two things: - Reasonably priced. - Easy to get. So stores like iTunes/Amazon are very successful for mp3 sales. You just add your credit card details once. Click 'buy' and within seconds you are consuming your purchase. DRM and proprietary software gets in the way of that easy purchase - consume flow. You would expect marketers and consumer analysts to recognise this bleedingly simple truth but they are busy making life harder for consumers and suing naughty consumers (like the RIAA suing dead people, grandmas and kids for thousands). |

That second image is not really something most people experience. Most people rarely use other OSs and need to boot windows, and most people don't use online libraries.
Non-skipable FBI, CIA, CDC, ABC and XYZ warnings that keep on showing up, however, are well known Some DVDs published in Germany and Austria feature don't-steal-this-DVD spot that's actually quite funny: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdko3MX8MJI The last sentence means "pirates can be punished with up to 5 years of prison time" |

While the first one's enjoyable and so totally true and I totally get the second. It seems like the title should be more like "piracy's easier than reading the instructions"; why didn't the user install the Mac Overdrive Console?
I know I'd way rather boot a virtual machine than run the native app! |

Though DRM often has setbacks that you can't get around (without removing it). Stuff like limiting the number of systems you can use a software on (I think it was Bioshock that had this problem before they fixed it... maybe Sims too). When music was still DRM'd a lot of people would lose their entire music collection when changing computers, and all they'd get from the retailers was "yes, that's how it works." There's less of that now, but to assume DRM's only drawback is a little inconvenience would be a mistake. |
