File browsing in PRS 600 ?

Hi,

I would like to know how are documents organized / accessed in the PRS 600 ? I read the manual online, some reviews but was not able to find an answer... Do you browse through directories and files like on a computer, or are your forced to use some playlist system (tags or whatever you call it) ?

And is mandatory to use Sony software ? Or can I feed the reader like I would fill an USB key (copying and pasting files using my own directory structure) ?

It won't reflect "directories" like you are thinking of them, to organize into "collections" you will need to use a "tag" system. I think this will require either the Sony Library or something like Calibre.

You have "Collections", which are "pseudo-folders"; eg, you could create an "SF" collection and assign all your SF books to that. Other than that, you have the standard library view, which lets you sort by title or author.

How do you create these collections ? Is it through the file structure, through the device or through softwares likes Sony or Calibre ? (As I may feed the device from severals computers, It may be kinda difficult to have to install software on each one)

Collections are only created via the Sony software or Calibre.

Using the Sony software you will create and name a collection then drag and drop books into that collection. Using Calibre, you will tag the books with the collection names you wish to create and when you copy the books to the reader the collections will be created and all books with tags sorted into those collections.

Thanks for clarification. And if some file is put directly on the device or on SD, but not tagged does it still appear in some default collection ?

If a book is not placed into a collection it will just show up in the View by author, Title, date entered, etc.

You can also use this software to manage files and create collections on the 600. Much less bloat than Calibre or E-library IMHO.
