New Bookless Library Opens

A new bookless library has opened at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Here's a link to the Time magazine article, "Is a bookless library still a library?"

I like the idea of the walls as a bunch of whiteboards, but who is going to clean them?

According to Mirriam and Webster a library is:

a place in which literary, musical, artistic, or reference materials (as books, manuscripts, recordings, or films) are kept for use but not for sale

Plase note that Mirriam and Webster make no reference to the format of the books, paper or electronic makes little difference so yes even if all of the books are in electronic form its still a library.

I am pretty sure the Library of Alexandria didn't have any books in it either.

They probably need a few couches and some community ereaders laying around for anyone to pick up access the contents of the entire library from.

A library without books sounds like a contradiction. Of course there are still books there, just different format but a library without printed books seems somehow 'naked' to me.

The article tells me absolutely nothing about how it actually works. Can I only read the 'books' on the computers at the 'library'? Can I access them from my PC back at the dorm? Can I download them onto some sort of portable device? Is there a skilled librarian there to help me do my research? For me, the librarians are what make it a library. Without a librarian, it's just a study hall.
