Bierce, Ambrose: An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. v1. 28 July 07
An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge is a short story by Ambrose Bierce and was originally published in 1890.
It's the story of a Mr. Peyton Farquhar, a man who is just about to be hanged for sympathizing with the Confederates. It's famous for its twist ending and irregular time sequence. I actually found out about this story by reading that it was an inspiration for some great movies--I don't wanna say which movies because I don't want to give the ending away. It was also the inspiration for a very highly-rated episode of The Twilight Zone here in the states. This is only about 20 pages or so on the reader, so I strongly recommend reading it if you get a chance to fit it in between your other books. I'm glad you did this. I just finished teaching this.
This is a great story. The Twilight Zone adaptation was also interesting - and accessible - to use as a comparison piece. Thanks! Don |

I thought about doing a collection, but there are so many of his stories out there and I haven't had the time to collect them all and put them in one file. I read one I like, then I post it, so sorry if it seems like too many files...
But it does give me a sense of completion when I read these short stories as single files. I like being able to get in and read from beginning to end on my lunch break at work... |

Keep them coming Travis. The short stories are the perfect thing when I finish one book and don't want to start another large book.
