I had a very literary upbringing!
Here are a few more questions about books and writers. One point each and an extra point for the author if that isn't already given in the wording of the question. 1. A translation of Roman poet Juvenal’s quote “Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?” inspired the title of what book, the only one of its kind in Time’s 2005 list of all-time greatest novels? 2. The 1994 murder of a 14 year old girl for ritualistic purposes in Botswana inspired the first book of what best-selling series? 3. If 221B Baker Street is to Sherlock Holmes, 9 Bywater Street Chelsea is to whom? 4. Which 1961 novel set on the island of Pianosa in the Mediterranean was written after its author was influenced by the classic 1923 anti-war satire The Good Soldier Svejk by Jaroslav Hasek? 5. What is the title of the acclaimed tetralogy of novels by Lawrence Durrell that are set in an African port city? 6. Arrakis is a fictional desert planet that is featured prominently in which classic science fiction series? 7. Roland Deschain is the protagonist of which series of seven fantasy books that were written between 1970 and 2004? 8. Shakespeare and Company, a famous independent bookstore that specialises in English literature is in which city? 9. Which 1989 Spanish novel follows the story of young Tita, who longs her entire life for Pedro but is only able to express her feelings through her cooking, which causes the people who taste it to experience what she feels? 10. In which 1924 book of English literature does the plot revolve around an incident in Marabar caves in India? 11. Which 1966 postcolonial parallel novel by Jean Rhys acts as a prequel to Charlotte Bronte’s 1847 novel Jane Eyre? 12. Which English trio comprised “The Lake Poets”? |

1. A translation of Roman poet Juvenal’s quote “Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?” inspired the title of what book, the only one of its kind in Time’s 2005 list of all-time greatest novels? Graphic novel Watchmen - Shayne
2. The 1994 murder of a 14 year old girl for ritualistic purposes in Botswana inspired the first book of what best-selling series? The No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith - Shayne 3. Catch 22 - Hamlet 5. What is the title of the acclaimed tetralogy of novels by Lawrence Durrell that are set in an African port city? Alexandria Quartet - poohbear 6. Arrakis is a fictional desert planet that is featured prominently in which classic science fiction series? Dune series - Hamlet 7. Roland Deschain is the protagonist of which series of seven fantasy books that were written between 1970 and 2004? 8. Shakespeare and Company, a famous independent bookstore that specialises in English literature is in which city? Paris - poohbear 9. Which 1989 Spanish novel follows the story of young Tita, who longs her entire life for Pedro but is only able to express her feelings through her cooking, which causes the people who taste it to experience what she feels? Like Water for Chocolate - Hamlet 10. In which 1924 book of English literature does the plot revolve around an incident in Marabar caves in India? A Passage to India - Hamlet 11. Which 1966 postcolonial parallel novel by Jean Rhys acts as a prequel to Charlotte Bronte’s 1847 novel Jane Eyre? Wide Sargasso Sea - poohbear 12. Which English trio comprised “The Lake Poets”? Wordsworth, Coleridge, Southey - poohbear So I make that: poohbear - 5 points Hamlet - 4 points Shayne - 4 points - 3 plus a bonus point for knowing Watchmen was a graphic novel. So that leaves 3. and 7. without answers so far, and authors still to be nominated for 1., 4., 6., 9. and 10. Last edited by Bookpossum; 03-31-2013 at 12:15 AM. |

Sorry Paul, no to both of yours, though I think Neil Gaiman was a good guess.
Yes orlok, it is George Smiley. So that gives us: 7 points - Shayne. 5 points - pooh bear. 4 points - Hamlet. 1 point - orlok. I'll put up the answers for any outstanding ones in about 12 hours' time - a Fantasy expert may turn up yet for No 7 - but it looks as if Shayne is going to be giving us the next quiz. |

Okay, just to wrap this one up:
1. Watchmen is by Alan Moore with artist Dave Gibbons and colourist John Higgins. 7. Seven fantasy book series is The Dark Tower by Stephen King. 9. The author of Like Water for Chocolate is Laura Esquivel. Over to Shayne for the next quiz. |
