Finnish media companies develop a new kind of digital paper

Quote:
Five Finnish media companies are testing a new kind of ePaper reader solution that is charged by ambient light. The solution will be piloted for newspaper distribution to hundreds of users in November. The test users receive daily the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper.

The goal is to create a new ePaper value chain, which provides media and content providers a completely new, environmentally-friendly method of delivery for media content. Target markets include both Finland and global market areas. Initially, the project will focus on journalistic content distribution, and ultimately, also the distribution of educational material.

Specifications:
Leia ePaper - The thinnest reader device yet
Application: Daily newspaper, magazines, books
Dimensions: 203 x 250 x 6 mm
Display: 9.7" Color eInk
Usage time: Infinite, indoors solar cell
Connectivity: Bluegiga wireless
Complete Article

Interesting... if they could fit that into a 7-8 inch device with an integrated cover, and move the solar cells onto the cover. Unlimited usage, color, super thin and light.

Somehow I think that is a faked page image as I've never seen color eInk that looks that vibrant. They are always faded out. And where are the specs? What resolution? Who made the screen? it looks like a very simple device with only buttons for changing pages, and not well placed buttons either unless you want to keep both hands constantly on the device.

If it works, I might replace my Kindle KB 3G, but alas, alas, I have already said that before 2 dozen times.

You have to admit that Finland in the winter is a pretty good test for anything solar powered...
