This one's great. Love this:

The plot's dizzying profusion of murder suspects plays like something out of early Raymond Chandler, under whose bright star Bleeding Edge unmistakably unreels. Shoals of red herrings keep swimming by, many of them never seen again. Still, reading Pynchon for plot is like reading Austen for sex. Each page has a little more of it than the one before, but you never quite get to the clincher.

Where I grew up, we called it "Monkey Pile".

I do like what little Pynchon I've read, (I have only read "V" and a few short stories) but it was a long time back. This one sounds good.

I finished it yesterday and really like it. I agree with doubleshuffle about Pynchon going soft—sorry, “getting better and better at [...] heartbreaking melancholy” is what I meant, of course. I still prefer his more epic tomes, but this was great, nevertheless.
