Gotta have apps in order to succeed. Zune HD went down because it didn't have apps.

That's it? They quit? Man if I were on their webos team or a dev or customer, I'd be one unhappy camper.

That's just weird, that a company that big can't stick it out for at least 6 months.

Supposedly they want to spin off their PC business too. What are they going to do, go back to making printers and calculators?

No, they are going to spend yet more money taking over yet another company.

They're basically a software and services company these days, just as IBM, Fujitsu, etc, are.

One of our main business areas is servers, plus services. Our iTitanium servers are probably the best in the market, better than Oracle. Those are high end products for big companies.

But that kind of stuff you don't see on TV too much, or people talking about it. It is a different kind of market.

IPG is also a strong one, or used to be.

Here's an interesting bit from a macrumors article:

Quote:
HP engineers had gone as far as to test webOS running on an iPad, finding that the operating system ran "over twice as fast" on the iPad 2 as it did on the TouchPad for which it had been designed. Even running as a web app within the iPad 2's Safari browser yielded substantially better performance than on the TouchPad.
The hardware reportedly stopped the team from innovating beyond certain points because it was slow and imposed constraints, which was highlighted when webOS was loaded on to Apple’s iPad device and found to run the platform significantly faster than the device for which it was originally developed.

With a focus on web technologies, webOS could be deployed in the iPad’s Mobile Safari browser as a web-app; this produced similar results, with it running many times faster in the browser than it did on the TouchPad.
The report notes that the TouchPad hardware had essentially already been designed when HP acquired Palm last year, with the engineers tasked with getting webOS running on the existing design. The resulting handicap of outdated hardware reportedly crippled the webOS team's ability to innovate for the tablet platform and ultimately led to the poor market reception.
This is just incompetence. If you want to compete against the iPad - and particularly if you want to compete against the iPad and Android - you have to bring your "A" game. You can't just stick an OS you just bought in a piece of hardware you had lying around and hope that it will be good enough.

I agree - I was developer for webos and I told them repeatedly that they needed to be very aggressive to get their foot in the door. It fell on deaf ears. The exclusive deal with one mediocre phone when they started with Sprint was the beginning of their undoing. Android was brand new and only at T-mobile. If Palm had flooded the carriers with devices they may have been sitting where Google is right now

To any Canadans out there, Best Buy Canada and Future Shop are apparently having liquidation sales on TouchPads.

I'm guessing it won't be long until something similar happens here in the US.

I'm getting one tomorrow. I can't resist this price. What if this is just a strategic move? This will sell them more tablets than any fancy iPad-like commercial on TV. Something's fishy about HP's announcement yesterday that they're out of the mobile and PC business...

I'd consider getting one - but no cash on hand means a 3 hour walk to the nearest FutureShop (gods only know how long it'd take to reach the Best Buy ). Besides, with HP dumping it, you're stuck with only the limited selection of apps that come on it and, if you're lucky and HP decides to be nice about it, those very few apps in their app store...

I wouldn't waste any money on it. apply the money to a tablet that is still being marketed.
