It's probably a unique situation. One strength of the book is that, being a adult targeted illustrated book, it's very giftable. You can't really give a pirated copy as such, so this particular book has a bit of a built in anti-piracy quality. It's sort of like a coffeetable picture book, sure you can pirate it, but whose going to bother?

I've passed the reference to the article on to an independent publisher and one of her authors who are petrified about piracy.

Interesting,
I mentioned an example like this in some of the copyright threads. There's alot of opportunities for those smart enough to adjust and get in early on this. We're seeing it in other industries where people are basically giving creative content for free in the hopes it goes viral, why? Because once you establish your name or brand, you can make alot more money off derivatives. Taking advantage of the internet allowing proliferation of works in this manner, opens up for alot of opportunities for those good enough to reach a broad base. |

Right, the eversion is an ad for something else. Now when our ereaders are printed on actual paper and look and feel 99% similar to printed books, it will be more interesting.

So your inferring that this books success is due to all the customers buying it to give away rather than buy it for themselves?

That particular book did the rounds at work via email the other day. It was great advertising as several people had a good giggle and also expressed interest in buying a real copy.

I think the positive attention contributes alot more to this being sold than anything else.

I don't. If it hadn't been a picture book piracy wouldn't have helped it at all.

At any rate, I think it's well established that a well circulated ebook that makes mention of a printed book, does the email in question make mention of the printed book? I'm assuming that it does, otherwise it would be harder for the recipient of the ebook email to purchase the printed book. |
