So I could use Sony's proprietary software to read their proprietary LRF/LRX files? Except I can't because they don't support Mac users. And that's why I'm waiting for a Kindle 2 to arrive instead of a Sony Reader.

Two things:

If Amazon went under and you had to replace your Kindle your backed up books with Amazon drm would not work on your new Kindle. You would be forced to remove the drm.

He got the price of subscriptions wrong. Mine's only $6/mo.

One of the biggest attraction of the Kindle is that you don't have to use a computer. It has been discussed somewhere on the forum. Computerphobers? Surely they will not backup their books because they bought Kindle so they don't have to touch a computer.
