Oliphant, Margaret: The Perpetual Curate, v1. 16 Feb 2009

Margaret Oliphant (1828-1897) was a popular Scottish writer. A widow who became the bread winner for her extended family, she was very prolific and wrote in a wide variety of genres.

'The Perpetual Curate' is one of her Chronicles of Carlingford series. A perpetual curate was the lowest order of Anglican clergy; and unlike rectors and vicars, not entitled to tithe income. The consequent lack of financial means meant perpetual curates could not easily support a family; and would generally seek promotion before getting married.
This entertaining novel centres on the struggles of Frank Wentworth, the perpetual curate of the title, as he struggles with his high-church ideals (which militate against his advancement), and his romantic attachment to Lucy Wodehouse.
What makes the story such an enjoyable read is Oliphant's ability to encompass a wide range of characters, and weave several strands together into a compelling narrative. There are also flashes of humour throughout, which give a tantalising glimpse of an author with a mischievous personality.
