Finally got time to pick it up yesterday. It goes to my significant other. She's not a heavy reader like me, so the WiFi at that price was perfect. And while I still prefer my Touch, I got to say that the WiFi is very well done! All it needs now is a nice skin.

Just setting up the one I bought as a gift - how frustrating that it ships with firmware v1.7 instead of 1.9. Updating now!

The version depends on the manufacturing date. They did not take the older ones out of their packaging and reflash them.

For anyone who's wondering, the firmware update can be done just by connecting the device to a wifi connection - it does not need to be registered first. Also the casing appears to be brand new - so either this was an unused return or they have replaced the outside (I hear that's what Apple does with refurbs) |

There are units that are called refurbs because they can't be sold as new once the box has been opened. Perhaps you got one of those.

Yeah, I guess when you're working with a white casing, it may need to be replaced if used. I am thinking the white will get dirty/stained/marked-up!

I've gotten several refurbished items in my life time and never saw anything as new as this. |

Yeah they look and act exactly like new. I've had a refurbished Kobo 1 from a warranty replacement and other than the box having a little "Refurbished" sticker on it looked new, and it even had the plastic on the screen.

Yep - I think mine was brand new! I love the colour! I bought a pink cover and now this is my ereader of choice (somehow is more vibrant and pleasing to the eye than my boring Onyx with black cover and broken button)!
