Problem with PRS-505 and mp3s

Hey everyone,

When I first got my reader and had a few files on it, I listened to mp3s while reading and had no problem. I expanded the memory with a Sony Duostick Pro 2g and a 4g SDHC. I put a bunch of mp3s on the SDHC. I don't play them all that often, but several times now when I have, the reader has locked up. It does it fairly quickly after the song starts.

My question is: Do you think I have a problem with specific mp3s, or is it because they are on the SDHC? Would I have better luck on the Duostick? Or do I need to limit my mp3s to what will fit in the Reader's native memory? If I do that, I will have to cut down the number of songs (about 482 Meg), but that's doable.

Thanks in advance.

The Reader's MP3 player is primitive in the extreme - and also "dangerous" to use, in that it doesn't have a "stop" button, only a "pause". It's only to easy to inadvertently leave it playing without realising it, and drain your battery flat.

My advice would be to use a separate MP3 player - even the most primitive of them is 10x better at the job than the Reader is.

I'd have to agree with Harry on this. You can pick up mp3 players with 1-2gb of memory for around $20 if you shop around.

Is there any way to modify the firmware to make the mp3 player more "user friendly?"

I have read that the PRS-505 is not compatible with SDHC, and the SD slot can accommodate up to 2gb SD cards (although some standard (non-standard?) SD cards with 4gb capacity may be compatible.) I have a 4gb SD card (not SDHC) which I plan to test in my 505 when I get it tomorrow. Not sure if the SDHC issue is the cause of your issue, but I would surely suggest you try it on an SD card (not SDHC) to see if the problem persists.

I'm pretty sure the new firmware version for the 505 was supposed to add SDHC support--and allow cards up to greater than 2gb. I haven't tried one yet, and from what I've read here, it seems that some people are still having problems.

Let me refine my original message about SDHC. My SDHC seems to work fine with books, and my Sony documentation says that SDHC are supported. My only problem has been with mp3s.
