Audible for Android new version (rel. 01/22/13) - Supports our removable SDHC cards,

I've read of the frustrations of many fellow users of Audible over the lack of ability to tell the Audible app to use a removable SDHC card if a device has a slot. Well I just downloaded the newest version 1.4.5 Build 504(of course from Google Play). It works perfectly. It is not ideal but I find their solution very workable. All you need to is change the setting for downloaded files in the "SETTINGS" section to point to whatever storage location you want to use. It can be the internal or either removable card slot (you know in case your device has a dock with a second card slot like the Asus Transformer family).

Today I was able to free up ~20GB of on device memory by pointing to the micro SD card I keep in my TF300t. I let Audible do a refresh of my library and viola it found the files I already had on the card. Of course you either properly create the "Audible" directory on the card as a place to save the files. There are instructions around the web on that but if anyone needs them I'll root around for them (hey it's about 2:30am and I need to get back to sleep but was excited this worked.. ).

When you point the app to your card it does not move the files for you so you need to either copy the existing Audible directory or manually create then copy the files over to the card. I did not spend enough time to check but I assume you need to leave the regular Audible directory on the internal memory but then again maybe not. I left well enough alone for tonight and just deleted the files in the default directory Audible uses for it's files (config as well as audiobook) leaving the other files and subdir's alone. Will test more when I have time later this week.

I finally feel like I can use my tablet for one of the primary uses I have for it. Of course this also should work fine on a phone with an SDHC slot. Only prob I have now...I will soon need a 64GB card in order to keep all my audiobooks handy. I like to have them all when I travel because I never know what I might be in the mood for at that particular microsecond

cool, glad it was of use. That omission seems pretty common for Android devices.

Does anyone know if it is more about the was the file system works than DRM/licensing restrictions to "help" control sharing. I know for the most part the iTunes version has a restriction that you can only have content of two Audible accounts. So I have always assumed it was about restrictions from publishers and perhaps even Audible/Amazon.

Have you also noticed that Audible has all titles costing a single credit rather than some requiring multiple credits. I wonder how that is going to affect selection if any of the audiobook publishers won't allow their titles to be sold at such a "low price". You know considering the cost of a credit is ~$12-$15 give or take. I would have loved to grab the original Shannara trilogy but Sword of Shannara was, I think, three credits at the time. I'm on hiatus from membership right now until I get caught up on the backlog. The last big sale cost me a bundle and I am still looking at about a dozen titles I need to get to. We won't mention my ebook backlog...

About dang time. Now I can cut loose a device. It was kind of annoying carrying my Fuze just for audio books when a big sd card would work all the same on my phone.

agree 10000000% there. even more so since Audible seems to be moving toward forcing only their two largest file formats. I'm no audiophile and find format 3 just fine even format 2 was OK. But on my TF300t they only support format 4 (now called standard) or format E (enhanced and HUGE files). I did not mind my Creative Zen Xtra supporting only format 4 as I easily upgraded it to a 100gb drive but the LCD died. I just haven't gotten around to replacing it or trying a repair. Now I can grab a decent Android MP3 player with a card slot and be close to happy.

They have also added a setting n the Android app to download either a single large file or the old style multi-part files for a title.

Oh, have you also noticed on the single large file downloads Audible has gone to some weird codename file naming convention vs. the old Title-userid naming convention.

So much has gone in an off-putting direction since being purchased by Amazon. Perhaps they have affected business since the other newest change is all titles are now a single credit. As you say...about darn time!
