Exclamation Free (Kindle KDP) Male Impersonators: Men Performing Masculinity [Cultural Studies]

Even from the regular promo multi-store publishers, we very rarely get quasi-academic science/history/culture freebies (glitch or non-), which I happen to like, so I'm counting this as significant enough to share as a title feature, and dump the rest of what I saw recognizably lurking in the slushpile after it.

Male Impersonators: Men Performing Masculinity by UK journalist Mark Simpson is a collection of essays that forms a quasi-academic cultural study, hardcovered in 1994 by textbook publisher Cassell (I have their Latin-English dictionary) and picked up for paperback reprint by academic publisher Routledge in 1995 (I have a bunch of books from them).

This is apparently a moderately significant book in the field of sociocultural gender perception studies, which was met with acclaim from various reasonably prominent outlets quoted in the blurb.

Simpson, incidentally, has his own Wikipedia article and is also responsible for coining the term "metrosexual", which in turn has its own Wikipedia article.

Free for who knows how long (DRM-ed, I downloaded and checked) @ Amazon main UK DE ES FR IT Additional charges may apply in certain areas.

Description
The book that helped change the way we look at men….

Why is bodybuilding a form of transsexualism? What do football and anal sex have in common? Why is Top Gun such an flamingly ‘gay’ movie? Why is male vanity such a hot commodity? And why oh why do Marky Mark’s pants keep falling down?

In this highly influential collection, first published in 1994, Mark Simpson argues for the vital centrality of homoeroticism and narcissism in any understanding of the fraught phenomenon of modern masculinity. Male Impersonators is a penetrating, ticklish but always serious examination of what happens to men when they become ‘objectified’.

From porn to shaving adverts, rock and roll to war movies, drag to lads’ nights out, Male Impersonators reviews the greatest show on Earth – the performance of masculinity.

The following comprises authors/publishers whom I recognized from having included previously and/or stuff that looked personally interesting and had credentials that checked out. I skipped a whole bunch of horror and romance and thriller stuff which you're perfectly capable of looking at yourself if you really want to know.

Not sorted.

Alison Joseph offers her 2004 Allison & Busby (a UK house)-published mystery/thriller with a nun as the amateur sleuth: A Violent Act (Sister Agnes)

Bram Stoker/Edgar-nominee Billie Sue Mosiman returns with: CRYPT TALES-9 Scary Stories

Canadian Mona Ingram once wrote a few romances for small-press Avalon, which seems to be a genre fiction publisher with a few authors in its stable. This is a self-pub contemporary romance: Full Circle

Ella Vines a few books out from specialty romance/erotica small imprint Siren. Here is her historical paranormal romance novelette which probably has erotic content: Bat Out of Hell

Previously-included Canadian writer of economics and construction articles Alex Carrick returns with some "modern magic mystery tales", if you've been collecting his stuff: The Priestess and Her Strobe Light Burden

ISFDBed David Bain returns with another short: War Wounds: A Civil War Ghost Story

Michael Haskins returns with a short which ties into his formerly Five Star-published series: Murder in Key West - A Mick Murphy Key West short story (Mick Murphy Key West Mystery)

Here is another graphic novel issue by Jazan Wild with narration by ISFDBed horror writer Stefan Petrucha, if you picked up the previous ones offered: JAZAN WILD'S CARNIVAL OF SOULS "Welcome To The Show"

Ellora's Cave-published Wynter Daniels offers a contemporary romance which she says has been previously released under another title: Not Enough

Valerie Douglas who writes as V.J. Devereaux for Ellora or Samhain (I've forgotten and am not looking it up) offers two contemporary romances under her own name: Dirty Politics (Millersburg Quartet) same series as previous freebie, Nike's Wings action/adventure romantic suspense

Previously-included small-pressed Gordon Ryan repeats the omnibus of his historical Irish-to-America immigrant drama: The Callahans: The Complete Series

Fellow MR member author Joan Hall Hovey repeats her suspense thriller: The Abduction of Mary Rose

Minor ISFDBed Lee Allen Howard returns with a "duo of supernatural thrillers". From the filesize, unless these are illustrated with large pictures, then they appear to be novel length: Desperate Spirits

Sharon Potts, whose Oceanview-published crime thriller we had as an official freebie last year, returns with what looks like a chick-lit revenge thriller: South Beach Cinderella

As noticed by Britomart in yesterday's thread, Catherine Kean returns with a 2007-Medallion paperbacked medieval historical romance: My Lady's Treasure

Also noted by Britomart, Bell Bridge Books-published Alicia Rasley returns with a Regency romances which she says was published in the 90s (probably by Zebra, from the looks of her listings) and now revised by herself: Royal Renegade, a Traditional Regency Romance Novel (Regency Escapades)

St. Martin's/Minotaur-published J.D. Rhoades returns with a hard-boiled PI/legal thriller: Lawyers, Guns and Money

Multnomah Books looks like one of the medium-sized Christian imprints (a search of their print catalogue brings up a Francine Rivers book and I understand she is some kind of semi-prominent CF author). In 2007 they published Creston Mapes' inspirational action/adventure mystery/thriller, which it seems he now offers himself: Nobody

Catherine Soto's fantasy shorts have appeared the Sword and Sorceress anthologies. She offers a mini-collection of those stories via the aegis of the Marion Zimmer Bradley Literary Works Trust: The Temple Cats

If you've ever had ambitions in this direction or are contemplating a career change in the current unpromising economy, here's something you might find helpful if it turns out your local agency is hiring: A Guide for the Aspiring Spy (The Anonymous Spy Series)

Enjoy, especially if you, too, like quasi-academic science/history/culture freebies or you've always wanted to know what to do during your CIA recruitment session.

Thanks for the additions.

ETA: Another one of those Michael Haskins shorts if anyone's been getting the series: The Floater - A Mick Murphy Key West short story (Mick Murphy Key West Mystery)

And it turns out this was printed in 1994 by Hodder's Headline imprint: Child of Silence (Bo Bradley Mysteries, Book One) by Abigail Padgett
