My granslather would put sugar on tomatoes, and our entire family puts pepper on cantelopes. I've no idea where that came from

when i was a kid, i would dip peeled carrots in sugar. kids don't eat veggies, kids eat sugar.

wrt the coffee, i use (real) maple syrup instead of sugar. tastes nice if i factor out the salt!

I dunno..... I was sure my mother at times used salt. Ah well; you're probably right based on the hits I see for each combination.

However I do see hits for Grapefruit and Salt!

Yes, this is amazing. I put the pepper in balsamic vinegar and dip it!

Sorry. I have no reason to doubt that your mother used salt. I was just basing my comment on what I've heard much more frequently.

Let me know what you think. I like to heat the vinegar so it gets a little syrupy. You can then either let it cool down, or use it when it's still a little warm. I like it both ways. The contrast of warm and cold is nice.

Interestingly enough, the word "salad" actually comes from salt, and is a clue to how the Roman's liked to season their vegetables.
