Google just notified me that Google E-books will be launching in Canada fairly soon. Here's part of what it said: You heard from us a few weeks ago about preparing for the launch of Google eBooks in Canada. In one way it is good, but others, not so good. I mean, have you seen the quality of a book scanned by google? Bottom of the barrel.

that's really only their out of copyright ones, and even then it gives you the choice between "orginal text" and "flowing text" at least on it's Android App.

but the regular books( NY Times best sellers etc...) appear to be just as normal as everybody else's.

But is it better than not having the book at all? I would say yes. Proofreading the library is probably going to take quite awhile though.

I'm with you - Google Books gives me access to rare books I'd not otherwise be able to read. I can proof them myself as I go along - the errors are rarely so egregious that I can't figure out what the original was.

Public Domain books are still free - there's also a bookstore for buying DRM protected commercial books.

Indeed, in some cases, you cannot actually download a file to use with the reader system of your choice. Rather, you have to use a browser or one of the Google eBook mobile reading apps.

On the other hand, theoretically you can support independent bookstores through your purchase. Wonder how that's working out...my guess is, not so much.
