I so dis a gree having a calibre built in spreadsheet that gives users a built in listing would be wonderful.

And with the huge ads in postings here that stinks . And spreadsheets are never easy to figure out; use and the directions are stink - o . .

I'm actually surprised that I'm still trying here! I even started taking a series of screen shots last night to show how exactly the catalog process and Libre Office is done!

Maybe I will finish that off tonight.

Maybe its a wind up, short of someone going around and doing it, I don't know what more help could be given.

eschwartz I was aware that Lostsoul had said the file was deleted but I figured either it could be restored from the recycle bin or a new one could be generated since it only takes seconds to do.

Yes, but that requires actual willingness to do so, which is what I wasn't seeing.

I have some sympathy with this idea

In Windows I use krksoft's Directory Lister Pro to produce ad-hoc lists for my music and video libraries. The output format I use is HTML, it also does Text and CSV. If ebook embedded metadata was as ubiquitous as music and video metadata is, then I'd also use it for my ebook libraries.

If you search hard enough the old free version of Directory Lister v 0.9.1 can be downloaded from some of the 'old software' repositories.

Here's a sample of its Text output

How to create a List of the books that are in your calibre library

For anyone coming to this thread the following info should easily clear up how to create a list of the books in your calibre library. Below are quotes from this thread.

First itimpi points to a great sticky post that outlines precisely how to create a catalog of the books in your library using the feature built into calibre. When you get to this link be sure to click on the spoiler buttons for more in depth explanations.

The sticky post above explains all options for creating a catalog. If an actual list is desired it tells you to use CSV format. Once you have the catalog in CSV format what do you do? itimpi explains below.

BetterRed goes a step further and explains that a CSV file can also be opened in a simple text editor if spreadsheets are too daunting. Or he adds maybe a simple ebook version of the books would suffice.

More info to clarify some of the items you'll come across when usnig CSV format.

Depending which format you choose you then have the option of selecting what and how to group in the second tab, when you select CSV option in Create Catalog you can select the columns you want 'printed'

You can read the CSV file into Libre Office Calc, maybe you can import it into Libre Office Writer as a Table
In case it is still unclear maybe a list of instructions may clear it up.

  • In the CSV/XML options tab select what FIELDS you want to include in your catalog
  • Click the OK button at the bottom of the screen
You will see a spinning ICON in the bottom right of the calibre screen while a job runs to make the catalog

When this job ENDS, you will be prompted for a location to store this catalog.

That file can now be opened via a tool like EXCEL or Open Office and printed.
Once you get the CSV file if you are confused the link provided below will guide you to a forum that can help you import the CSV file into Libre Office Calc.

If all of the above is just too much maybe a different perspective. The below link takes you to the Calibre user's manual covering the catalog creation feature.

Just for good measure lets remind everyone now that the CSV file can be opened in a simple text editor. It might be worth a shot.

Below are recent Testimonials from folks that have followed these instructions:

Seriously, God bless you for stating this in terms that even I could follow, and make it happen.

I now have a simple list of 8,001 books that I can sort by author (first) name or title, that I can open on my computer or Kindle Fire!!! And, by knowing this simple method, I will just delete each list and replace it with each new addition to my library.

You rock friend... Thank you so very much.

alanHd I'm glad after reading the directions you were able to produce a suitable list.

To those that find this info helpful all we ask is that you pass on your newly acquired knowledge to those that follow.

perhaps you should just make a YouTube video?
Use sock puppets. They transcend language barriers.

By the way, satisfying though it may be, this is in the forum rules:

?? What language barriers, and why would I need a sock puppet to do whatever it is you think I should do with them?

And it is DoctorOhh and BetterRed who ignored lostcause. If that's a response to me, perhaps you misinterpreted "which is what I wasn't seeing"? I meant I see, and see a lacking of willingness, not that I don't see, therefore don't see the willingness. There was background here...
