Stop Online Piracy Act...

could cripple sites like YouTube, Twitter, storage lockers, and more

The U.S. House of Representatives has introduced a new bill called the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) that would grant the state Attorney General to force ISPs, payment gateways and search engines to block “rogue” sites engaging in illegally selling copyrighted material.

While the bill’s main focus is to shut down “rogue” sites from profiting on copyright material, its vague wording means that sites like YouTube and Twitter could be forced to take legal responsibility for content that is deemed as a violation of copyright. Couple that with the AG getting the power of being judge, jury and executioner, this means content hosting sites no longer can turn to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) for legal defense. The bill would turn the tables on who is responsible for illegally hosted content. Instead of the content uploaders taking responsibility, the hosts themselves will have to bear the legal costs.

i guess the entertainment industry is miffed that people are turning off the tv, staying home from the theatre and passing by bookstores in favor of finding entertainment online to the point that they're willing to kill the internet. this has nothing to do with piracy.

On a related note, but echoing what you opined, is the dicussion my wife and I had tonight. We had just dropped our daughter at a friends party and thought we might go and see a movie. The Three Musketeers to be exact.

It was going to cost us over AU$55 to buy the tickets and purchase nibbles. Turned out the session times were atrocious (another growing trend) and we decided it could wait. Eventually I will probably buy the blu-ray...maybe...

The entertainment and publishing industry hide in their caves, waving stone tipped implements, not daring to look out the cave to see what the outside world is doing. I now truly believe they are never, ever going to change. Merely being side shunted by newer, progressive companies fully prepared to embrace modern distribution practices and also fully prepared to adapt to future ones, whilst the Neanderthals slip quietly into extinction or are overrun.

The article appears to be very poorly written and both devoid both of pertinant information while at the same time exhibiting misconceptions about the legislative process.

I don't think I will panic until I have seen the full bill and know what comittee it is being reviewed in.

Were the reporter remotely competent, this piece would have told us who introduced the bill - and who the co-sponsers were. As the article is devoid of any information of that nature whatsoever, I am forced to assume an attempt is being made to lead me to make some reaction out of a sense of outrage - even if I have to be misled to get me there.

No thanks.

Here is yet some more info:

http://thehill.com/blogs/hillicon-va...ine-piracy-act

It has been introduced by a committee of 12, both Democrats and Republicans. Some groups from both sides of the aisle are fighting it.

Quote:
a number of public-interest organizations and free-speech advocates have rallied opposition to the bill. The coalition is diverse enough to encompass both the Tea Party Patriots and the liberal group Demand Progress.

how different is this from the COICA legislation that was proposed this past april by Leahy?

Is it just another name for the same product?

This contradicts with pre-existing law. Currently, any site that allows users to post anything (which is most of them) is considered a service provider, and therefore not held responsible for how that service is used. A bit like how ATT isn't responsible for you dialing a wrong number and wasting your minutes.

Apart from that it's also, ya know, insane. But that's obvious.

The harder they try to control the internet the more creative people will get in getting around it. I guess if that's a hill they wanna die on, they can go right ahead. I do not worry about the continued openness of the internet. It's a juggernaut at this point and they can't stop it. They can make it harder, they can make people have to invent ways to get around it, but they can't stop it. I find it funny more than anything.

This seems like a issue related to this proposed law:

Google Refused Law Enforcement Request To Pull Police Brutality Video
Quote:
Of the 757 items that Google was asked to remove by the U.S. government in the first half of 2011, eighty percent were motivated by allegations of defamation.

The company complied with 63 percent of the U.S. government's requests. Google noted that it may decline to comply with requests to remove content because an agency has failed to obtain a court order.

Quote:
Between January and June 2011, American government entities filed 5,950 requests for information on Google users, 93 percent of which the company complied with.

The U.S. topped charts as the government that placed the third highest number of content removal requests, behind Brazil and Germany, but ahead of China. The U.S. also put in more requests for user data than any other country in the world.
