I'll ask BOb to take a look. Or maybe you could help us update the page.

You are right of course. I read ePub and Mobi books with about equal frequency and was forgetting which opens at the cover (ePub) and which does not (Mobi). In the absence of a "firstpage" Guide item, however, a Mobi book will open at the first page of the book, and (in all Mobi implementions that I'm aware of) a "page back" from there will display the cover.

As a matter of good practice, however, I think personally that it's always as well to explicitly specify in the Guide where the book should open.

When I read Mobi books in the Cybook, they always opened at the cover. At least with my own .mobi files, created with MobiPerl, with no "firstpage" and with an off-flow cover picture.

Yes, this seems to be a peculiarity of the Gen3 that it does that. Whether it opens at the cover or the first page, though, is a difference of one page forward or page back, so it makes no practical difference.

So how do you do that?

Add the cover as the first item in the "Manifest" section of the OPF file.

There certainly should be one: it's the section of the file which lists the files that make up the book, and the order in which they appear. If you open the OPF in Mobipocket Creator, the manifest is the list that appears on the "Publication Files" screen.

If you include a jpg of your cover as the first page of your document, you can define it as the first item in your table of contents. When the Kindle opens your book, it should go to the first item in the TOC.

At least, that's how it worked for me.

The Mobi file spec has not changed, so no, it's still done the same way.
