The papercut thing is still rather hilarious to hear of. And I do agree about availability. I have fair book availability where I am (Taiwan), but it's not amazing if you have specific wants in foreign languages, and ordering a book from overseas can get expensive. Libraries here don't often have a big selection of anything other than Chinese either. Of course, I can still just read on my computers, and still don't need an expensive specialized device for any of it, especially since any ebook I want to read I'll convert to a PDF and can read on almost any computer I want via dragging around a USB flash stick or SD card. The extra advantage to reading on, say, a netbook or notebook, is that people don't get particularly curious about what you're doing and what you have. People quickly get bored of looking over your shoulder when they realize you're not watching movies or pornography. |

1. An ebook reader IS a computer even if you don't want to admit. It a very limited special purpose computer but it is still a computer. The same way that an Xbox is a computer. 2. The truth is that both of you have points about the screens. It does do the job you want it to do and does it very well. However it also true that the screen can't do what he wants it to do yet. Soon it probally will be able to. |

I've found that most of the people who ask me questions are students who want to find out about suitablity for their uni texts. So they ask intelligent questions.

One thing that always bothers me when people ask about my kindle is that when I tell them how much the Kindle costs, they go, "Are the books free afterward?"
Me; ... Since when are books ever free? In fact, the only place (aside from the library and that doesn't really count owing to taxes and all) I've ever gotten free books is ON the Kindle. It's just like a game system; you have to buy the system to play the games on, then you have to buy the games. Except with this game system, the games are a lot cheaper and have other benefits that dead tree books don't have. A book is a book and it has to be paid for, I really don't see why people would think otherwise. Last edited by Anarel; 12-24-2009 at 11:40 AM. |

the bit about intelligent questions is interesting-I've not found students to be markedly more 'intelligent' as they tend to be long on theory but short on experience. But I do wonder if maybe readers, in general, aren't more intelligent? Although experience gained thru reading is, technically, theory, the better fiction is well-researched & tends to mirror human motivations & actions, thus providing (IMO) a reasonable facsimile of experience. |

Maybe people who ask more are more likely to be asking for the nth time (n>1) when you find them, and they have had the stupid questions already removed by selection

I think people who assume the books are free are people who don't read very often. Most people read a couple of books a year, and even if the books were free they would never recoup their $259 investment. They don't understand that for people who read much more often, the convenience makes it worth it, and that saving a few bucks a book (when you read 100 instead of 2 a year) can eventually pay for the device as well.

The e-readers are here to help you and to don't need more to carry many books with you. Also, you don't need to have a e-reader(device). You can have a Windows Mobile device or a Palm one, with a eBook reader on it |

All I can say is I can't wait to go out with my shiney new Astak PPro and be an ambassador answering questions - stupid or not. I realize I fall into that category of "the newest convert is always the most zealous", but I can't wait for the opportunity to share my new-found enthusiasm.
Well, I can, actually, cuz I'm not going to go out and ride random buses just for the opportunity, and I'm not going to sit on an icey park bench in hopes some other frozen fool will stop by to chat. However, we will be flying to Hawaii soon, and there will be ample opportunities for the curious to accommodate my newfound childish delight. |

I've had my e-reader for about 1.5 years now and what I've found interesting is that the reactions to it have changed from a general question, "What is that?" to "Is that a Kindle or a Sony, and do you like it?". Clearly awareness of the product in the marketplace is much greater now than it was then.
Even when it disrupts my reading pleasure, I'm always happy to stop and answer questions. I was once a Gemstar owner so I've seen what happens when the market doesn't grow. I want to do my part to encourage people to adopt e-readers. |

Having used a Sony PDA (the 2000/2001 PJ20) as an ebook reader for the last ten years, I don't think I've been asked what it is more than a handful of times. Mind you, the size of 2.5*3.5 inches probably hides what I'm doing...
Just updated to another Sony - the 5" pocket - in bright pink, which might make it a little easier to spot! |

Stereotypical hispanic sarcastic person:
"Why do you even go here if you have a nook?" *massive facepalm* I literally wish people could take the time to ask questions in a non-irritating demeanor. |
