EPub Sub-forum?
Do we need an ePub sub-forum in E-Book Uploads? Since the Sony Reader is the only native reader, it might be appropriate to place ePub uploads there but eventually I think they should have their own sub-forum.

None of the other formats have a sub-forum. Why would the ePub need one??

I think you misunderstood. Yes the other formats do have their own subforum. It's just not quite explicitly spelled out.

I think currently they should go in the "Other Books" Sub-Forum. There are no epub books there today, so a dedicated sub-forum may be needed eventually but not yet.

We originally had the LRF subforum to upload eBook for the 500/505. Then because of the iLiad and other devices that read Mobipocket eBooks, we had enough people creating eBooks in Mobipocket format. So that got it's own subforum. Then we had enough people creating IMP format eBooks so that got it's own subforum. Once we find there are enough ePub eBooks here to warrent a subforum, one will be created and all the eBooks moved over.

I hope people start making books in ePub, but I do agree with Wallcraft that they do not need their own forum until we actually have some. I also agree that they should go in the Other forum for now, and not in the Sony (BBeB/LRF) forum. Lots of people can read ePub files on platforms other than Sony, using Adobe DE, FBReader and Stanza. Jack |

Oh ..... you're talking about the book upload areas?? I guess when I hear the word "forum" I think more about discussions than uploads.
I suppose if people start uploading books in epub format then it would be good for it to have its own upload area. Sure. |

What tools do you have that can create ePub format books?

There is a bit of a shortage of any decent tools though. There's certainly nothing like Mobipocket Creator (that I know of) and Rector is totally vapourware at the moment, it hasn't had a single release.

There is a shortage of tools. The most basic is oeb2epub, which would allow many of the MOBI ebooks uploaded here to be easily converted to ePub (since they are OEBs before they are MOBIs). MishaS's version of oeb2epub does not create a toc.ncx file, and so has no TOC in Adobe Digital Editions. There does not seem to be a way to upload an OEB file to Feedbooks, so the web-based approach is also out for now.
Calibre will probably soon have an oeb2epub, and that may be the first easy way to create ePubs. They will actually be OEB compatible ePubs, i.e. using a subset of ePubs capabilities. It would be relatively easy, though, to add a CSS file to give a "house style" to your ePub ebooks. |

Unlike other formats, you don't necessarily need format-specific tools. An Epub book just consists of files in text-based formats (XHTML+CSS, OPF, NCX, SVG) and standard raster image formats (JPEG, PNG) wrapped in a ZIP archive. Just zip up your HTML and run epubcheck to make sure everything is kosher .

Being unable to currently read epub but having a book in that format, I would like to get it to Mobipocket format. |
