The physical product is surely the same. And since an owner can add or delete the "offers," buying a used Kindle, which many people do, renders the product code of no import. In that case you would have to check the home screen to be sure that SOs have been removed if you are paying the higher "without special offers" price.

I wanted to ask the ebay seller of the ad version kindle of the serial number, then add it to my account at manage my kindle, then see if the pay to delete option is available, then buy the unit. But now the option to add kindle via serial number is removed for some reason at amazon so I can't check this way.

but what happens to the SO/noSO flag when someone does a reset to sell it and the new buyer sets it up with their own amazon account? hmm? is the SO/noSO flag tied to the account, or is it coded somewhere in memory where even a firmware reset doesn't change it?

The option to add a device was removed from the Manage Your Kindle page about a year ago. You can only do it from the device itself now.

I think the SO only appears after you register your device

I look at the picture of the kindle voyage box, but there is no product codes there, only imei, upc, dsn, and iccid. any way to check what SO or noSO version? thanks

In my experience Amazon reps are almost always willing to disable Kindle with Offers free of charge.

This particularly works if you live in a region where Kindle Offers are not valid, but from the experiences of friends and family also is done for American based customers.

The Engadget website also lists the UPCs, and based on the pics, this is a 3G Kindle without special offers.

Of course, this assumes that the Kindle inside the box is the same one that was actually shipped in it.
