July ebook sales figures announced

The Association of American Publishers (AAP) just released the sales figures for the domestic US market (press release). The total net book sales are up 2% at 1.54 billion dollars. Ebook sales, on the other hand, are up 213% over last July at 16.2 million dollars. (Ebook sales in June were 14 million dollars.)

It could be interesting to compare number of books and benefits too.

By the way does the "total" include ebooks? That makes it:

1524 million dollars in paper and audio books
16 million dollars in ebooks

calculating back the "previous figures":

16 / 3.13 = 5.2 million dollars in ebooks
1504 /1.02 = 1510 million dollars in paper and audio books

that results in an increase of only 1% in paper and audio books.

I keep hearing how ebooks are such a small percentage of the market that the publishers don't care about them but I must be interpreting this wrong. I have to assume that most of the ebooks that are sold are in the adult category.

Adult Hardcover sales were $88.7 million vs $16.2 million so 18.2% of hard cover sales

Adult Mass market sales were $68.2 million vs $16.2 million so 23.7% of mass market sales

I didn't actually go back and look, but it seems like ebooks are gaining 1-2% market share every month or two.

It'll be interesting to see the figures in a couple of months when the effect of the geographic restrictions start hitting people.

I can't use fictionwise for any new releases and much of the back catalog anymore because i live in the UK.

Just had to get Fictionwise to refund my last order due to this - but then again it might get counted as a sale first.

It'll start hitting most of us outside the US.

the geographic restrictions really suck. I'm in the US, but so far, several of the ebooks I've bought are ones from the UK. It is a global economy now, so why not sell to those with money to buy?
