@theducks: Since the wget command worked that means the downloaded file is correct. What the install script does is call the tar command to check and then extract the downloaded file. Apparently something in your python setup is causing the tar command to fail when called from the install script.

Anything come to mind that might be causing this?

@tulsa: No the wget command was just a test, it would not upgrade calibre

I didn't have any problems either and I've upgraded my Ubuntu 9.10 64bit desktop and 32bit laptop to 6.46.

I just did a first-time install of Calibre 6.46 on Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit with no problems, for what it's worth. That is, no problem except that this Linux version lacks a DR800 profile.

Edit: Oh, and the Windows 7 64-bit upgrade was done earlier today, also with no problems. Installed over the top of the old one, no uninstallation, as per usual.

Thanks.
No ideas, (I am not a Python programmer)
Synaptic says I have

python2.5-minimal 2.5.4-1ubuntu6.1
AND
python2.6-minimal 2.6.4-0ubuntu3

packages installed
can that be correct?

the python version shouldn't matter. Post the output of

Code:
sudo python -c "import os, pprint; pprint.pprint(os.environ)"
