Is there anything that can be done about the spam?
The same one seems to show up around the same time every day, any chance of filtering for the word 4Videosoft or maybe adding captcha for a person's first post? Or I dunno is it always coming from the same IP?

Spammers on MobileRead are usually dealt with swiftly and effectively. Spam in your eMail can usually be filtered out by word/phrase/source or ads can be blocked with certain web browsers.
Are these posts at MR that you are referring to? |

Yes it often appears in the new/general/deals area from people trying to sell crappy video conversion software.
It is often dealt with quickly, I click report 5-10 mins later it goes away it's just that it is the same spam every day at about the same time, seems like the kind of thing that could be just filtered out |

The IP address of that one flops around like a carp in the bottom of the fishing boat. If we could nail that bastard permanently, we would. It shows up in other areas on a routine basis, too. We can certainly discuss captcha, but there are barriers to that. (Being totally annoying being the most prevalent...)

edit: it seems banning the account and then editing the post into a bad review at least annoys them found at http://forum.applian.com/showthread....4688#post14688 Last edited by Iphinome; 04-06-2010 at 05:04 AM. |

The moderator team has been discussing captcha and variants. We may have a solution sometime in the future. Don't hold your breath, though, Alex is dealing with a lot of IRL flack and doesn't have a lot of time for programming the forum, sadly...

It won't be a complete solution, but has there been any discussion on the active moderation of a new poster's first (say) 10 posts....

How about not allowing a poster to create a new topic unless they have 10 posts?

I joined an electronics board which vets all new members posts before they allow the post to appear on the board. Though this looks like more work for the mods unfortunately. But it would virtually eliminate the spam and more importantly phishing attacks from clicking on an infected link. |

We have a partial approach to that. Alex subscribes to a Spam Filter that moderates any early post that fits certain criteria. Those posts are sent to the Moderation Queue. There are Numbers limits on some things and content screening, etc.
I'm being deliberately vague for a reason... |

I'm afraid this just leads people to make 10 vacuous posts. The forum would be cluttered with messages saying, "thanks"; or "I agree." In th long run this is rather irritating.

Believe me... there is a lot of SPAM mitigation in place. But, it isn't perfect.
99% of the time moderators are on line. Just report the SPAM and it is usually deleted pretty quickly. BOb |
