We had protection against that. Every (new) program got a fixed amount of cpu seconds. You could only get more on request and after testing.

Since our mainframe was a timesharing system, we got as much time as we wanted....just had to share with all other programs running at the time. With no (or few) other programs running, we effectively had a dedicated system.

The date is a bit anonymous and Ido not think people always check the date in a thread before posting. On the other hand I do not see anything wrong in continue a thread even if it is old if it is a relevant continuatuion. I thought one big advantage of forums was that you could take long pauses in a thread and then continue them.

Not in this specific case. I thought you made a general point since I have seen similar posts in other threads and always wondered why it is considered bad to continue on topic in a thread if the thread is old.

'Old' threads often re-kindle previous 'problems' that have an up-to-date solution. But it is an easy thing to do by accident if one looks at the "Similar Threads" box at the foot of the page and not realise the date of the last post. Currently we have 5 previous threads, one of which has last post 12-29-2005 "Bookeen releases firmware upgrade - then pulls it" (bit of a 4-year old deja vu situation there ?)
