Would it help if I said it really is an arithmetic question (not a maths question, or some pseudo-artithmetic sequence*). That is, the rule for the sequence is simple, and only involves two of the four basic arithmetic functions. (i.e. two out of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).

However, it is a sequence I haven't seen discussed a great deal.


* i.e. it's not something like numbers in alphabetical order, or by length in roman numerals. It is the numbers that define the sequence, not some odd property of the numbers.

Sorry, didn't say why:
5 to 10 is 5
10 to 11 is 1
11 to 12 is 1
12 to 14 is 2
14 to 18 is 4

That is the move to the next number seems to reflect the previous number, apart from the zero of 10 because you would never get anywhere with that.

Therefore I added 8 to 18 and got 26.

Sound logic apart from the 5 and the 10, where it doesn't work. But it's better than anything I can come up with...

I'm with Stitchy on these maths problems (and to think I got Maths, Advanced Maths and A Level Maths qualifications at school ).

You almost have the solution, in that each number is the previous number plus something. But you haven't really worked out how to get it properly.

26 is the next number. But after that the sequence is

38, 62, 74, 102, 104, 108, 116, 122, 126, 138, 162

It seems as if you multiply the digits of each number (ignoring 0), and then add the product to the number. But that doesn't explain how you got from 5 to 10. So I think what you do is square the product of the digits and then divide it by the product before adding it back, which would do it. But I don't have a good reason for ignoring those zeroes. Best I can do.

Your first idea is spot on. Zero is ignored, because if you don't the series quickly become uninteresting!

5 -> 10 follows the same rules as the others. The product of the digits of 5 is 5. 5 + 5 = 10
