Using Kobo Shelves

I am looking for a new ePub reader and am looking at Kobo and Sony models. I have been trying to find out more about Kobo's Shelves, which appear to be the equivalent of Sony's Collections. I downloaded the Kobo manual but it is a bit low on detail so maybe a Kobo user could help out with a few questions:

1) How many shelves can the reader display on a screen page?

2) Is there any hierarchy to shelf management, e.g. sub-shelves?

3) Is there any limit to the number of books on a shelf?

  1. I believe 9 shelves per page
  2. No hierarchy
  3. No limit

Shelves are easiest managed via calibre; see one of the sticky posts in this forum for information.

On a Kobo Glo with firmware 2.6.1b I'm seeing 7 shelves per page.

Kobo Glo fw v2.8.1a: 9 shelves/page

Kobo Aura HD fw v2.8.1a: 10 shelves/page

... and managing shelves on a Kobo via Calibre is very much like managing Collections on a Sony via Calibre (unless it changed since the PRST1)

Just FYI, speaking as an old Sony fan, I like the fact that Kobos will display your Calibre Series/index info, even without using a metadata plugboard. Secondly, another welcome option is that your Calibre Comments & Published Date are also transferred to, and viewable from the Kobo booklist without needing to include the Calibre "jacket" inside each epub.

Thanks to all for the helpful information. It's good to hear that Kobo is well supported by calibre and it looks like the 2.8.1a firmware is the way to go. It's a shame that readers don't seem to offer any hierarchy for categories but Sony is no better than Kobo in this respect.
