Kindles in Tesco

I don't know how long they've been there, but I was in my local Tesco today and they had a shelf full of Kindles for sale (or more accurately empty Kindle boxes to take to the till).

They had them in the computer section rather than the book section, and they didn't have any on display to look at, never mind play with. Both wasted opportunities if you ask me. They were priced the same as they are on Amazon UK.

Wow! That is news! Tesco are the biggest supermarket chain in the UK, for those unfamiliar with them.

If they're not sold at a discount, I can't see any advantage in buying them from Tesco. I assume you'd still want to register them with Amazon, and when you buy from Amazon, they're already registered.

Are Tesco also selling ebooks in Kindle format?

Isn't Tesco one of the supermarket chains that got nailed in the consumer piece on the quality of the food sold in the stores a few years back? Gotta forgive me because our news on that stuff is often years behind the actual event. I think it might have even been highlighted on Ramsey's "The F-Word" show. I forget the stores in the "sting" but Tesco had to be one simply because of their size.

Not so far as I can see - epub and pdf only. Also cannot see Kindle on their website.

Assuming they have a demo unit to play with you can tell how it fits in your hands , tell if you can really read the fonts, etc.... it might make the sale, or prevent you from making a mistake.

Great. There is no problem with buying the Kindle at a store like Tesco and registering it. You take it out of the books and it will ask you to register. It is pretty easy. It would be the same process as buying a Kindle at Target, Staples, or Best Buy in the US.

They probably have an agreement with Amazon not to sell them online, like with PCworld/Currys. It wouldn't really surprise me if they weren't allowed to discount them either.

I don't know if this is general knowledge or not, or for how long it's been the case, but I saw Kindles for sale in John Lewis' as well today. They also had a couple of display units you could play with there.

I have seen Kindles on display in Currys. Along with Sony and Aluratek, Samsung readers.
Its convenient to buy from stores as you can get a hands on feel of the device and also theres no waiting for shipping etc.,
And in places like Tesco you can get card points from the purchase.

"Instant gratification" is the most obvious reason. I'm sure that many people will prefer to buy one from a shop than have to wait for it to be delivered.

Tesco are selling e-books on-line that are copy protected by ADE.

TescoDirect are selling Sony PRS-350, PRS-650 and Bookeen Cybook Opus e-book readers on-line, but apparently not the Kindle.

Hang around a few months and you'll see everybody and their uncle selling ebooks online. All it takes is a contracts lawyer and a website. Once Google gets their bookstore rolling you'll see a billion ebookstores blooming.

Hang around a year or so after than and you'll see a billion ebookstores wilting.

Its a gold rush now.
But gold rushes end and only benefit wholesalers.
