global 3g wireless for DR800sg?

it is euipped with Gobi by Qualcomm, so I assume someday it should activate its global 3g?

I do not understand is how DR800SG can work in USA without a SIM card.

It's a CDMA device. CDMA doesn't use a SIM.

In Europe I think is the WCDMA. But DR800SG I use in Spain has a slot for a SIM card (with access to data), but when I introduce does not work.

Is it a software or hardware cuestion?

The Gobi is a card that can do both CDMA and GSM by loading different firmware on the fly to the card. GSM based protocols use SIM cards whereas most CDMA networks do not use as SIM.
CDMA is used primarily in the US, Australia and Japan, with the rest of the world (other than China, they have there own protocols) use GSM however both types of networks may be in a particular country (for example in the US AT&T/Cingular is a GSM based network).
Now I don't know if the card in the SG is a gobi 1000 or 2000 and if iRex have supplied the firmware for qserial to load the GSM firmware though I expect they have as there is a slot for a SIM.

WCDMA is not used in europe, that I know of.

But please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the DR800SG only currently sold in North America? And there, it unquestionably uses CDMA, not GSM. Although the hardware may support GSM and have a SIM slot, the firmware probably doesn't contain the appropriate drivers for it.

That is quite possible, someone would have to dig into the SG software to see if it can be used world wide. I believe MrX did look (could be wrong) but I can't remember the conclusion.

The 800SG only looks like it has the firmware and configs for US Verizon. However, another ARM linux device with the same gobi card could probably provide the needed firmware and configuration files. However, until the 2.0 sources are released the erbrowser included in the beta no longer allows opening arbitrary URLs so there would be very little gain to provisioning a non-verizon service. I also know very little about the gobi modem, are there frequency-specific models? If it isn't tri- or quad-band even if it can speak the GSM protocols it might be doing so at frequencies nobody in Europe is listening to...

The interesting files:
Code:
./lib/modules/2.6.24-irex/extra:

QCUSBNet2kiRex.ko

Is not that the firmware, in the European version?
What I have not tried, is to install the European version in my SG. Would it work?

all the files I listed are only in the firmware of the 800SG. All networking scripts/executables/libraries/modules are omitted from the 800S. iRex uses opkg packaging to manage which files get installed in a particular configuration (firmware), and the following packages are only installed on the SG:

FYI,

There's been some discussion of this over on iRex's forums, including a post by an employee that backs up the idea that the GSM drivers are not included in the firmware. Not a lot of details beyond that though.

The European model, the DR800S, does not support 3G at all (hence no "-G" in its model number).

To clarify, the S version does not have the gobi hardware ( need someone to crack open their precious reader to check this ) and hence there is no point including the drivers in the firmware.
