They have to be divisible by 4 to be a leap year.

No, they're not year numbers in disguise.

The bit of Fat Abe's post that I quoted is the way to go.

The list is a set rather than a sequence (I thought that was clear, but perhaps it wasn't).

No, not years at all. They are times, just as they appear to be. But this is not a number or time puzzle.

These all belong:
nine twenty-seven
thirteen forty-eight
eight fifty-nine
nineteen seventeen
two oh-eight

ten thirty-eight
nine fourteen

These do not belong:
eight ten
seven fifty-eight
six twenty-seven

What's the thing that makes the first list belong together, and the second list not?

A set means that the order is not significant. A sequence would mean that the order is significant.

That is, it doesn't matter whether I wrote the ones that belong with 9:27 first, last or in the middle.

My last hint for this morning is that, since I've written them out as words as a clue, obviously it's the words form that's important. But it's not syllables that make the difference.

Oh - and no time beginning six or seven can be in the set.
