Here are my selections. I am in the mood for a classic. I really like the time period from the mid-1800s up to WWI. I live in what was once the Wild West so I am especially interested in books that are about the growth of America, frontier expansion, and adventurous spirits. I also enjoy stories about the Industrial Age and the rise of the nouveau riche, America's aristocracy, and different social classes.
I tried to select authors who had an impact on American literature but didn't necessarily select their most famous work. I was going for an eclectic mix. They are listed in random order. I took the descriptions from Goodreads and Wikipedia. Well, that was my thought process! I hope that everyone enjoys whatever we read! The Custom of the Country by Edith Wharton (1910) Spoiler:
O Pioneers by Willa Cather (1913) Spoiler:
Roughing It by Mark Twain (1872) Spoiler:
Burning Daylight by Jack London (1910) Spoiler:
Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana Jr. (1840) Spoiler:
Ramona by Helen Hunt Jackson (1884) Spoiler:
Washington Square by Henry James (1880) Spoiler:
A Country Doctor by Sarah Orne Jewett (1884) Spoiler:

Great list which will require much thought before I choose.
I can't resist saying, however, that I pass Sarah Orne Jewett's house on every trip to my retina specialist and the negative association may knock the old gal out of contention! |

Very interesting selection, Bookworm_Girl! I'm going to enjoy sifting through them before deciding which to vote for.
The poll is now up here. |

Great list, especially for the lesser-known titles.

What a great selection!
There is such an embarrassment of riches here that I'm going to have to think carefully. |

Maybe we just need to read one a month for the next eight months! Really interesting list, Bookworm_Girl - thank you.

Actually, that's why (and of course I have no objection) I'm not that interested in a second-chance month. I've already got the lists and I'd rather get a new one. Just call me greedy. My suggestion would be that if the volunteers dry up, just call it a cycle and reset without a second-chance. |

Except my TBR pile keeps growing and growing with no time to catch up on reading all the great books that are nominated!

And thank you all for the positive feedback on my selections! I'm glad people find them interesting because I was a bit shy about what to nominate. I enjoy so much being exposed to everyone's recommendations. This club has really expanded my awareness of authors and book titles that has made my reading more diverse and thought-provoking and not just best-sellers or the most popular classics.

Please add my appreciation for such a great list. I'm also grateful to this book club for expanding my world and introducing books I probably otherwise would have missed.

Who would like to take their turn selecting the nominations for the upcoming rotating month in December?
(if you have any questions, you can refer to the first post or just ask) |

Can I make a suggestion that if no one volunteers for December that we have an open month rather than a second chance month? My reasons are that it would give an opening for books that are hard to classify and that we wouldn't have to revisit a theme.

Sounds like a good idea if no one among those who have been active here but have yet to take a turn, and there are a few, volunteers.
