This is slightly out of date. With the K2 coming out soon, now is an excellent time to create a new one.

Can someone provide a link to a downloadable copy of MobiDesktop 6.0? I'm having hosting issues with the server I used to use.

Do you have a Kindle? You only benefit from MobiDesktop if you have the original Kindle becuase v6.0 of MobiDesktop recognizes the original Kindle as a reading device. This made it easier to manage your ebooks.

At this point, I'm recommending that you download calibre instead. It supports both Kindles.

Thank you for such a complete guide. I'm the kind of person who wants to know how everything works right out of the box.

If you are running Vista, v6.0 doesn't recognize the Kindle1.

MobiDesktop 6.0 recognizes both Kindle 1 *and* Kindle 2. And once recognized if you upgrade to the current version both Kindles are still recognized and listed under devices with all the information.

But does v6.0 give you the PID of the K2? If not, then the K2 isn't recognized as a reading device (this has a specific meaning) but as a USB drive.

And when the K2 came out I tried upgrading from v6.0 to v6.2. After the upgrade the original Kindle was no longer recognized as a reading device but as a USB drive.

Yes, 6.0 gives a PID for the Kindle 2 and I can use "send to device" (or whatever the command is) correctly. I didn't try any material encoded for the K2 however, just non-DRM'd files.

I was thinking that it would be better to write a new one for the K2. I don't have one, so I can't.
