Soon individuals will be able to buy personal drones from Amazon. Then the real fun will begin.
The FAA is going to have to regulate all this or sky crashes are going to soar. Imagine a passenger jet landing at some air port with the sky filled with drones. What happens if a drone crashes into a car on a highway? |

Hmm, Bezos is now using the Washington Post to post about himself...
Interesting. Maybe it means that this won't be a US first like everything else? It was illegal for Amazon to shoot that drone video in the U.S., so it went abroad http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...t-went-abroad/ Last edited by Jessica Lares; 12-10-2013 at 11:30 AM. Reason: Typos |

EDIT: Ah, on reading the article more closely I see they are legal for hobbyists, but not for commercial use. That still strikes me as a little odd - they are very heavily used for commercial aerial photography in the UK. Last edited by HarryT; 12-10-2013 at 11:12 AM. |

Hobbyists still have set rules though, I would think?

I'm an RC flyer in the US. In more rural areas, people go into a field and do what they like, more or less.
In densely populated areas like where I live, there are rules at the city, county, and maybe even state level for aircraft over a certain weight (small electric park flyers are generally excepted. Or at least tacitly ignored) that require aircraft to only be flown in certain places under certain conditions. In my county, I can only fly in a county field, if I pay for a county permit, join a county club, and have insurance through membership the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics). Flying RC in my area is more onerous and expensive than being a shooter in the UK, I'd bet. I gave up and now only fly the light electrics. |

In the US FCC licenses are required for short wave transmissions and radio controlled air planes. Each State, County, Town and City sets aside areas for using radio controlled air planes.
These drones are already being limited by lots of states having bills in their legislatures to restrict use of drones to police and fire agencies. Thus, the new Amazon drones will probably only be available in SOME states, not all. The FAA will have to license those drones as well. I am not sure but I believe privately owned drones by individuals will also need FAA licenses as do all aircraft now. Last edited by sirmaru; 12-11-2013 at 03:28 PM. |

Your information is a little out of date. The FCC stopped issuing licences for RC models in 1983.
