Kindle Fire HD 8.9" battery problem (temperature sensitive device/battery)
I cannot fully charge the battery of my new Kindle Fire HD 8.9" if outside temperature is in 55F-58F range (around 14C). The battery just stopping charging at 70%-80% in room with temperature below 59F. The standart troubleshooting did not help!
Have somebody seen it before? Repro: left device in the compartment with temperature below 59F, wait for 2 hours and start charging. In 3-4 hours the battery icon at top right became white. I used Amazon Kindle PowerFast 9 W charger I'm afraid the battery will be dead in weeks. Is it secure to use this device in such temperature range 55F-58F? |

Buy these two apps to monitor your battery:
http://www.amazon.com/GSam-Battery-M...tablet+edition and, http://www.amazon.com/GSam-Battery-M...f=pd_sim_mas_1 Then install the battery percentage icon at a large enough size for comfort in the upper right hand corner. Use the Fire down to 10% to 15%. Open to the GSam battery screen and fully charge to 100%. The GSam icon will show that percentage when it is reached. A 100% charge can take up to SIX HOURS. Preferably, do the charging overnight. At least one full cycle like that is necessary to train the battery measurements and to mix the Lithium chemicals thoroughly to perform at full capacity. |

Sirmaru, thanks for prompt respone. I'm sure that's the Lithuim chemicals made bad job under this conditions. Could you please find for me lithium battery specification?
Particulary, how these batteries operating in 50F-60F temperature range? Thank you for your assistance. |

Temperatures
Quote:
Charge the battery only in temperatures that range from 32° to 95° Fahrenheit (0° to 35° Celsius). (Amazon.com (2010-05-26). Kindle User's Guide (Kindle Locations 2108-2109). Amazon. Kindle Edition. ) Operating temperature — 32°F to 95°F (0°C to 35°C). Storage temperature — 14°F to 113°F (-10°C to 45°C). (Amazon.com (2010-05-26). Kindle User's Guide (Kindle Locations 2222-2223). Amazon. Kindle Edition. ) Thus, 50F to 60F should be fine for charging, operating and storage. Just do what I told you in my last post. |

Well. I guess you found manual for old Kinde Fire (1st generation). Maybe for Kindle HD it's looks different. Interesting, I can not find similar manual on Amazon.com (with operating temperature range) for Kindle Fire HD 8.9". This is a red flag.
RE: Custom battery monitor: For me no sense additionally to calibrate battery at this point. Let's left it to Amazon design team. They produced it, they should to fix it. Just think about it - an installation of additional software will interfere with original problem. It do not help. It's clear now, in this temperarure range (10C-15C) one of two (or both ) problems are possible: 1) The KIndle HD battery has a problem or 2) Build-in Kindle's Fire HD battery monitor does not operate correctly! Do you agree, Sirmaru? |

I see my fire hd's battery runs just fine and is normal 80-90°F or 26-32°C. Using GSam to see the battery temp.
You need to call c/s and see what is up or get a replacement. |

Try the new update that just came out and see if that changes anything.

Sirmaru, please try left your KFHD in cold room (50F-60F temperature range) for 2-3 hrs. Then start battery monitoring. Start charging. In 3-4 hours battery stop charging at 70%-80%.

(plus/minus 2%). I suppose the all units are affected. I returned one unit to Amazon already. The worst thing is - we don't know how will behave such Kindle's battery in the future (3-6 months range). |

Why??
Quote:
Why would you want to live in such cold conditions? The only time it got down to 61 F was in the last hurricane for two days. My kindle Fire HD still operated at that temperature. Of course I could not charge it since I had no power. Here are the Kindle Fire HD manual statements on the subject: "The rechargeable battery in your Kindle Fire should be replaced only by an authorized service provider. For more information about batteries, go to ww.amazon.com/kindleterms. Charge the battery only in temperatures that range from 32° to 95° Fahrenheit (0° to 35° Celsius)." Operating temperature — 32°F to 95°F (0°C to 35°C). Storage temperature — 14°F to 113°F (-10°C to 45°C). Get the GSam Battery Monitor App and leave it on the screen as you charge. It is probably charging and you just can't see it. The standard battery icon does NOT reflect what is actually happening. Here are my measured GSam readings during a charge cycle: Timed charging of KFHD7-32: 10:01 AM - 15% - Start charge - GSam Estimate to Full Charge = 5:06 11:07 AM - 37% - GSam Estimate to Full Charge = 3:03 1:20 PM - 80% - GSam Estimate to Full Charge = 1:00 1:56 PM - 91% - GSam Estimate to Full Charge = 0:27 2:26 PM - 96% - GSam Estimate to Full Charge = 0:12 2:51 PM - 100% - GSam Estimate to Full Charge = 0:00 You may not have a battery problem at all. You just need the GSam app to guide you properly. Last edited by sirmaru; 12-14-2012 at 07:51 PM. |

Sirmaru, I'm talking about charging Kindle Fire HD 8.9 16/32Gb in temperature
range 58F-50F. Winter is comming As I said before - left device in the compartment with temperature below 59F, wait for 2 hours and start charging. In 3-4 hours the battery stop charging at 70% (plus/minus 2%). According a specification you found for Kindle HD operating temperature range it's not looks like by design. Bummer.. it's a design flaw. |

hi am having the same issue... I live in the mountains and my house is very cold...like 50 degrees in the morning..and I am finding I am unable to fully charge my kindle at home...but if I charge it at my work or somewhere where the temp is warmer I'm able to fully charge it...at home I can't charge it higher than 80 percent...I called amazon and they didn't know how to help me...is this a design flaw? should I try to return it or are all of them like this?
