Seriousness Are Snakes Going Extinct?

The turn of the millennium was not kind to the snakes.

Herpetologist Chris Reading and his team have been counting snakes through their own surveys and looking at population data going back to 1987 to see what’s happening to snake populations. The alarming findings, to be published soon in Biology Letters, indicate that most of the species studied saw a great decrease in population, with the greatest loss between 1998 and 2002.....

We have had the occasional snake. This is a post from last year, where we had the snake-catcher come in to remove a big one, and take it up the top of the road to the National Park:

Snakes are not going extinct fast enough! I found a rattlesnake in the backyard today.

I read the full article. It was interesting, thanks Kenny. With some types of them declining as much as ninety percent, it seems like there is quite a serious concern as to what is happening.

Marc, lovely photos of a very beautiful being. Thank you. S/he looked quite comfortable and at home on that chair. It is wonderful that the snake was successfully relocated to a National Park for a more suitable home, without any harm.

The Carpet Pythons are very pretty, and varied. Relocating is fairly easy. The local council employs snake-catchers who you can call if you want one moved. The National Park, for us, 100m up the road (we walk our dogs along the edge most mornngs). That was a big one, though we've had a smaller (1m) python on the bottom balcony and under the spa. It was fine (the problem with the big one is that s/he climbed down onto our top balcony, and likely would have had problems getting off. Most of our neighbours have had them around, but the pythons are pretty harmless. The Brown Snakes and Whip Snakes, which are also around, are more of a worry, but we've never had any that haven't casually moved on (just have to keep the dogs away from them. Maggie is curious about everything

).
