It looks like it's tied to Borders. Seems like it might support epub and/or pdf? Could someone verify?

Yesterday, I went to the local Big Lots to look at this new ereader. The very smug salesgirl said she didn't think they had any. I asked if she was sure and if she could check. Without bothering to check, she told me that she was positive they didn't have any and then said "I'm pretty sure" (nothing like a positive lie, backed up by a weasely maybe). It went down hill from there, so I won't finish the story.

I was finally informed that the store had none of these ereaders to sell until Wednesday. So, I guess I'll brave more abuse at the hands of the rude and self righteous salesgirl and try again tomorrow.

One thing I did find was the quick start guide for the device, as sold by Borders. Other than a quick rundown on how to turn it on and access the features, it doesn't tell you much. The one interesting thing was at the bottom. An Adobe logo and the words "Adobe Digital Editions". So, this thing should be just fine for epub and PDF.

If I get my hands on one tomorrow, I'll give it a torture test and report my findings. I'm really interested in seeing what the battery life is.

Just a guess at this point, but there is a strong possibility that this ereader runs some variant of Linux, possibly Android. I'll see if I can find out.

Folks, I have found a website for this product:

http://www.slickusa.com

Unfortunately, there is no product description. But there is technical support.

You can learn quite a bit about it by viewing the ER-700.pdf guide at the link posted by level6. Not touch screen. There are details on how to sign up for Borders ebooks, and download them to the unit via PC running the Borders ebook app.

It can play audio and video, and has a slideshow option for pictures. It even shows a calendar option on a menu screen shot. Strikes me as much like a non-touch Sony Reader with a color screen.

I went to our local Big Lots, and the helpful clerk there got a boxed unit out of the locked display case for me to look over. Looking closely at it through the clear front cover, it did not strike me as looking very "solid".

Odd little beastie, but for $90, it could be a decent reader/audio player. Seems that Slick targets low-end electronics like this and audio players, etc to the Big Lots/Dollar General market - something for everyone

Boy, that's literally a case of all Flash and no substance. The web site is all in Flash (total failing marks for that). When you click on the dancing monkeys (sarcasm), you get a pretty picture, but no information about the product (another failing grade).

I'm still going to see if my local, abusive Big Lots has this tomorrow. If I get one, at least I'll be able to return it if it is a POS.

Hey roc, can I trade you Big Lots employees?

Wow, way to show your enthusiasm for your brand new job....

Even so, I think this item has solved my problem as to which eReader to get for my teenage son. I will try to get one tomorrow evening.

I got one of these yesterday, primarily to compare it with my Augen TB (yeah, I know...)

First impressions:

1. The Slick and the Augen appear to be similar hardware, certainly the same 800x480 LCD screen. The Slick is slightly shorter, since it has no keyboard, but it feels a bit heavier than the Augen.

2. The Slick eReader does a better job rendering ePub books. It has only one font in three sizes, but it does a much better job with the page format than the Augen. In some cases, the Augen displayed a book (Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide) in a default Courier font with minimal formatting on chapter headers, etc., while the Slick did a much better job. I do wish that the Slick had the same range of margin and line spacing settings that the Augen does, though.

3. The Slick has a built in "File Explorer" which handles nested folders on a memory card, and lets you open and delete books. You can't delete books on the Augen without using a computer.

4. The image viewer on the Slick is much worse than the Augen, which is actually not bad. The same images that are clearly displayed on the Augen appear to be very badly resized on the Slick. The Augen also has "fit to height" and "fit to width" options missing on the Slick. The Slick does have a slideshow feature, but I wouldn't bother, considering how poor the images look.

5. I haven't tried the Slick MP3 player yet, but it looks better than the completely stripped-down one on the Augen.

6. The Slick has a graphical "library shelf" display to select books, but I'll probably use the file explorer instead, since it understands folders, instead of just displaying all books alphabetically.

7. The Slick charges via it's AC adapter and USB (hooray); the Augen doesn't charge via USB.

8. Operational notes:
a. The Slick hasn't shown any of the problems with "forgetting" the SD card that the Augen does.
b. Since the Slick doesn't have a keyboard, you can only go to a percentage position in a book (in 5% increments), not a specific page like the Augen.
c. Clicking twice on the OK button while reading displays a bookmarks menu that is not mentioned in the user manual.
d. The Slick is a little slower to turn pages (at least in an ePub book) than the Augen, especially the first page of a new chapter, but it's not really objectionable.
e. You can turn off the Augen while reading and it will return to your page when you turn it back on, but I can't make this work on the Slick. It always seems to go to a "shutdown" screen, and you have to use "Continue Reading" to get back to your page, but it doesn't take very long.

I think I might keep the Slick, just because of its superior page rendering. We'll see...

Click on the Support link, and download the PDF guide (when I tried looking the site up from both my WinMob phone with IE and Opera, and my Android 1.6 Archos 5, the Flash junk showed a whole lotta nuttin - Idiots for cutting off those viewers)

Not a chance in Hades of getting "my" BL folks - the guy helping out even called me "young man", and I'm 60 (he's probably close to that age, too) - love that flattery

So, I went to Big Lots tonight to check out this unit. They had three of them in stock. A smart and helpful employee got one out for me to look at.

I looked quite a bit nicer (and bigger) than I had expected. I didn't think it looked or felt cheap. Of course I didn't get to turn it on and there was no display so I couldn't say for sure.

I had planned to buy one for my son but he turned it down. He doesn't want an eReader period. Glad I asked and didn't surprise him with it. So then I almost bought it for myself even though I definately don't need another reader. My husband talked me out of it.

Now it's haunting me so I'm hoping others here will convince me it's not worth the $90.

I could only watch 5 second increments of the video that "Reviewer" made as I live in the boondocks and have satellite internet. I hope that you are reading and can explain a couple things I did hear -
"sometimes it turns on and sometimes it doesn't"
"I'm not that impressed with it"

Ellen, I would love to hear what you have to say about yours.

So, is anyone who bought one keeping it? Returning it?

Geeze, he didn't think that through. It also plays several types of video files. He could have said "thanks for the book reader, Mom!" and had a portable porn machine!

I'm sure he doesn't realize the potential.

EDIT: I'm going to show him this tomorrow and watch him kicking himself ...

I disagree with almost everything the "reviewer" said in her video.

I had no problems turning the Slick on - just press and hold the power switch for about 2 seconds.

She didn't seem to realize that the "Favorites" menu item added the current book to your Favorites list; it has nothing to do with bookmarks.

I also had no problems inserting or removing the SD card, and the Slick recognized it without a problem. From her description of having to "pry it out" and it not being recognized, it sounds like she put in it upside down.

Of course it's not a touch screen - it's a $90 reader!

I do agree with her that the "Jump to..." function would be more useful if it allowed jumping to a specific chapter (or even page), instead of a percent of the book.

I also agree that the calendar function isn't terribly useful. I'm not sure, however, how she expected to be able to input information into the calendar, since there is no keyboard!

I am so far not very impressed with the picture and video capabilities of the Slick. As I mentioned, it does a poor job of resizing images, and I haven't been able to get it to play a number of .AVI and .WMV videos that my Augen plays without any problems.

It's definitely a better eReader than the Augen, even with its limited page formatting. The decision on whether to keep it or return it will likely hinge on whether I can get the picture and video functions to work acceptably.
