Umberto Eco

Hello

Is anyone aware of any works by Umberto Eco available for Sony's reader?
And would this http://www.diesel-ebooks.com/cgi-bin...acy-eBook.html
book be readable on the Sony reader? Thanks.

Bummer, but it looks like "no" is the answer for now:
http://www.diesel-ebooks.com/support...kb&article=105

Sony has announced support for the Adobe Digital Editions, but it's not clear if that will be made available on the current Reader as an upgrade. If they do, it will open up other sources of books with Digital Rights Management (DRM) for the Reader other than the Sony Connect bookstore.

So, for the present you can read any pretty much any straight text, non-DRM'ed content on the Reader, but you may have to reformat it a bit (or a lot) and you can purchase and download DRM'ed content from Sony.

Highly formatted or graphics heavy documents (e.g. scientific papers, graphic novels) might not convert well, due to the fact that most are formatted for A4 or 8.5x11 inch pages which doesn't map very legibly to the much smaller Reader screen.

Note that non-DRM doesn't imply "public domain only". There are sources of current, copyrighted works on the web who sell their products in non-DRM formats that work fine on the Reader directly or with just a bit of re-formatting. My favorite is Baen Books; a list of others can be found in this thread:

Sorry - no idea about the Eco question.

And welcome aboard!

Regards,
Bob

I notice that it is available in MSReader LIT format. It is possible to remove the DRM from LIT files and then convert the file to be read on the Sony Reader. Please make sure it is legal before you do it.

His works are available out there if you search. Flame of..., Foucault's Pendulum, etc... Mostly in PDF but you can conver them to LRF. Regrettably it is not legal. Off course you can certainly allay your conscience if not the law by being sure to buy a paper edition before locating and converting the electronic. Think of it as a compulsory license were the digital work is not otherwise being made legally available.

That said, I don't think that our gracious host would want details regarding how to find such files to be shared on the open forum.

The illegality of conversion is questionable.

Not for a work that you did not purchase. Certainly not for the distribution of the converted or pre-converted file. At least in the US. It is pretty clearly illegal and a violation of one of the bundled copyrights (reproduction, distribution). To the extent that you break DRM you are also violating the Digital Millennium Act. That said, so was dumping tea in Boston harbor and violating prohibition in the 20's yet... here we are.

Oh. You did not say that the PDFs were illicit. I thought you were referring to legal ones.
